SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are asking for the public’s help locating a suspect wanted for shooting and killing a 27-year-old woman.Police say Robert Reed reportedly shot Sylvianita Widman during an apparent road-rage incident on the 100 block of Meadowbrook Drive at 5:30 p.m. Monday.According to police, two cars were traveling north down Meadowbrook when they both stopped and the passengers got into an argument.RELATED: Woman dies after being shot in a Skyline intersectionWidman then reportedly approached Reed while he was in his car. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County health officials say the county’s contact tracing program has not been hampered by the same issues plaguing efforts in other areas like New York City, but there may be blind spots in the county’s data.One of the keys to successful contact tracing is eliciting a full list of close contacts from an individual who tests positive. A “close contact” is defined as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes, beginning 48 hours before illness appeared and lasting until the patient was isolated.It’s sensitive work, but the breadth of that list is critical to suppression efforts. “By identifying or ‘tracing’ the contacts of people infected with COVID-19, we can identify other individuals who might be infected, test those individuals for infection, treat those who are also infected and trace their contacts as well,” the county says on its website.However, in New York City, only 35% of the residents who tested positive actually provided information about their close contacts to tracers during the first two weeks of June, the New York Times reported.That means that even if tracers were able to reach virtually all of the individuals on their list, they would still likely have a vastly incomplete picture of those who may be at risk.That’s where San Diego’s first potential blind spot comes in. Unlike New York City, San Diego County is not actively monitoring the percentage of individuals who provide information on close contacts to tracers, County Medical Director Dr. Eric McDonald said Monday.“We don’t specifically follow that metric,” he said. “We think we’re probably doing better than the numbers you hear from New York. It’s difficult though for us to drill down on that specifically.”Instead, the county bases one of its triggers on attempts to reach the close contacts it has on file, regardless of how complete or incomplete that list may be, and regardless of whether tracers actually got in touch with those individuals -- a second potential blind spot.McDonald acknowledged that tracers are often given out-of-date or inaccurate contact information, and must rely on public records and other sources to try to reach out to close contacts.As of Monday, the county had attempted to contact 87% of known close contacts within 24 hours, well above the county’s goal of 70%.“I think we’re doing pretty well from the contact tracing perspective,” McDonald said of that metric.“I would say the general gestalt from talking to our contact tracers is that most individuals are actually quite cooperative and do give as best information as they can about close contacts. And we really do appreciate that,” he added.McDonald said that staff would reexamine the county’s database in light of the inquiry by ABC 10News, and on Tuesday a spokeswoman provided an update. “Approximately 60 percent of our cases identify one or more close contacts,” said communications officer Sarah Sweeney.Assuming that every person who tests positive has at least one close contact, it means San Diego County disease detectives are placing calls to -- at most -- 52% of close contacts within the first 24 hours.McDonald said while that tracers do not get close contact information from everyone, there are circumstances when a close contact is simply a household member and has no other unique close contacts to follow up on.“Some close contacts don’t need to be identifying any other close contacts,” he said. “Overall, I would say that our cooperation is good to excellent.”From May 4 to May 28, people who tested positive in the county identified an average of 2.2 close contacts, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said at a Board of Supervisors meeting earlier this month.Whether tracers actually reach those individuals is another story.“I’m a person who thinks it would be great to have perfection: every single person telling us every single thing that they know. "You have to make sure that it [the generator] is working so that we have some power. Get us through this little event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have released video footage after officers shot and killed a murder suspect following a standoff on May 29.The 32-year-old suspect who was shot and killed was accused of shooting and killing another man at a City Heights apartment complex.The video shows officer stationed outside the apartment complex. Watch the full video below:According to police, gunfire was reported at the complex on the 3800 block of Euclid Avenue around 3:30 p.m.Officers later found a 62-year-old Hispanic man with at least one gunshot wound. Three officers fired their weapons at the suspect, striking him several times," a San Diego Police Department statement said. "Specially trained STAR medics deployed with the SWAT team to provide aid, but the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. A firearm and a knife were recovered."Earlier in the week, the suspect’s mother reportedly contacted police after he threatened her with a firearm.Police say the women told investigators her son wanted to be involved in a shooting with police and to commit “suicide by cop.” 1700
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco are working on a spray designed to block the novel coronavirus from hijacking cells in the body, like a biological mask or internal personal protective equipment.They’re doing it by borrowing a defense mechanism from an unlikely source: llamas.The team, led by UCSF graduate student Michael Schoof, engineered a synthetic molecule based on one found in a llama’s immune system that acts like an antibody but is one-tenth the size.Human antibody treatments, known as convalescent plasma, require a transfusion in a hospital setting. But this smaller molecule, called a nanobody, can be easily self-administered via an inhaler or nasal spray and rapidly manufactured using yeast, Schoof said.The scientists named their product AeroNabs. They say it could be an inexpensive intervention for treating and preventing COVID-19 while the world waits for a vaccine.“We don't know how effective vaccines will be. We don't know how long it will take to rapidly deploy them, so we envision this product as hopefully a bridge until there is widespread, effective vaccination,” Schoof said.Once a vaccine is available, AeroNabs could offer protection for individuals who are unable to be inoculated for health reasons, he said, or an early treatment option.The team is in talks with commercial partners and hopes to begin clinical trials soon.In the 1980s, Belgian scientists discovered that about half of the antibodies in camels, llamas and alpacas are shaped differently than the antibodies found in other mammals, including humans. Researchers later learned they could use a fragment of these oddly shaped camelid antibodies to bind to antigens.Those fragments are called nanobodies.Currently, there is only one FDA-approved drug that uses nanobodies. Caplacizumab was approved last year to treat a rare blood disorder.The team at UCSF sifted through billions of nanobodies to find one that binded best to the spike proteins on the coronavirus, then engineered it to stick even better.The coronavirus uses its spikes to enter cells and replicate; the spikes are essentially the pathogen’s key into the body. By coating the spikes with nanobodies or antibodies, the viral key no longer fits into the body’s receptors and the virus can’t get in.“This works in the lab. It needs to be translated into the clinic,” said Schoof.The team at UCSF still needs to figure out the best delivery method, whether it is a nebulizer, an inhaler or a nasal spray. 2524
