SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University Saturday ordered all on-campus residents to stay at home over Labor Day Weekend amid an increase of coronavirus cases tied to the university.The university sent an email to students who live on campus, advising them to stay “in their current residences except for essential needs.”The “Stay at Home” order is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday, September 5, through Tuesday, September 8 at 6 a.m.RELATED: San Diego State University reports 120 more COVID-19 cases since fall start“At that time, this order will be revisited and updated as necessary,” the university said of the order’s expected expiration.“Violations of this order may result in disciplinary consequences,” the school continued, although no specificities were given as to the consequences for violating the order.The announcement comes as the university has, so far, experienced 184 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases since the start of the fall semester. 978

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some local colleges are shifting toward a new policy of getting rid of standardized test scores as an admissions requirement.The University of San Diego is one of 60 other colleges, including local Cal State and University of California campuses, now using the "test blind" policy amid a pandemic-altered high school experience and education.The SAT has been something on Laila Ellyse's mind for some time now. She says part of her concern recently has been COVID-19-related restrictions on testing group sizes."You've been hearing about it for such a long time you have to take the SAT, it's like this big bad test," Ellyse said. "The number of seats available at any given test site is now reduced because of social distancing and all of those kinds of things." Ellyse says she had to go all the way to Utah to take the test because there were no testing site options in California. Standardized testing has also become increasingly debate following the nationwide college admissions scandal, in which several parents were charged with paying to get their kids admitted to top tier colleges.That's part of the reason USD is now a test blind campus. While SAT or ACT scores can be admitted, they'll be ignored for admission. Instead, college officials will consider other factors including high school academic record and GPA, letters of recommendation, admission essays, extra-curricular involvement, work experiences, and family responsibilities.USD says it hopes the new policy will make the admissions process fair and equitable for all students and allow lower-income students who may face barriers to accessing testing an even playing field.The test blind policy may not be permanent though. UCSD is test-optional until 2022 and test blind until 2024. San Diego State and local CSU campuses are test blind for 2021 only at the moment. 1868

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police requested the public’s help Thursday to identify a man suspected of buying an Apple MacBook and iPhones through identity theft and credit card fraud. The man used a fake ID card with the victim’s real information to access the victim’s account at the Verizon store on Sports Arena Blvd. June 9, police said. Two new Apple iPhone X’s worth ,500 were added to the victim’s account. Police said the man also went to the Best Buy on Mission Center Road and bought a MacBook worth ,000 through the victim’s store credit card. The victim has no knowledge of how his information was accessed, police said. Investigators said the suspect is a white man in his mid 20s to mid 30s, heavy set, with short dark hair. He had a beard and was wearing sunglasses when he shopped. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 885
