EVANSTON, Ill. – If you drive too fast, you could miss it. But a chance turn into one alley just north of Chicago will transport you into a drive-thru art gallery. “I wanted to take this place this alley which is just ugly or lackluster and make it into something special,” explained Teresa Parod. The Evanston, Illinois-based painter and artist is the person behind several vibrant garage door murals. From floral motifs to interplanetary themes, her goal she says is to uplift people through her painting. “I want all my public art to be positive because no one who walks down this alley… most didn't ask me to paint this,” she said. “So, I don't want them to come and see some something that is very negative or makes them feel unhappy.” The canvases range from one-and-a-half to two car garage doors. She only charges for material. The medium: house paint. “What I really like is when people come who are not in the neighborhood and they're just riding their bikes or walking dog and they're like well what is this? And it's something special,” said Parod. The artist started with her own door, concerned with how her neighbors might respond. “This is my own garage. And I thought it would be fun to put the front of my house on my garage,” she said. But many have embraced transforming the back alley into a gallery of vibrant, public works of art. Neighbor Judy Slagle saw the work and just had to have her garage door painted as well. Hers is a collection of brightly colored sunflowers. “When I came home especially in the winter like it is now, I wanted to come home and have something that would make me smile and other people I hope too,” said Slagle For an enhanced experience, Parod’s husband Bill, a sound artist and software developer, is creating an augmented reality app. Virtual birds can be seen on the screen interacting with the paintings. He is designing customized vignettes for each door. “So that we could walk to them and you could hear something in 3D and walk around and the birds and so on could fly around,” he explained. The doors are now in high demand. “Everybody started asking me to do them and I have a waiting list,” said Parod. “So, I hope to do the whole alley and I hope to do more alleys.” And while Parod may see the world as her canvas, this time it’s right up her alley. 2346

Highly processed foods, refined sugars and corn syrup feel good in the moment, but are not a recipe for long-term happiness.Skulas-Ray says there are a million diets out there, but she says most people can benefit from keeping it simple. Akron, Ohio, police are investigating after two people were shot during a high school football game.According to police, around 8 p.m., a boy in his late teens was arguing with a 19-year-old in the stands during a football game being played between Firestone and East at Ellet High School. Food is a basic necessity, but getting access to that food, doesn’t always come easy. “I have been using SNAP off and on for about 13 years,” SNAP recipient Andrea said. Andrea is on food stamps. SNAP – the government’s “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program” – is the country’s largest nutrition assistance program. “I did not have any family to support me, I had lost my job, and I had a child with a lot of health needs. So I was in a place of needing to provide food for my family,” Andrea said. At one point in her life, Andrea says she was budgeting a week for groceries. It wasn’t enough to support her whole family. “I had this moment where I just kind of sat on the kitchen floor and realized that I could allow myself to go hungry, but I couldn’t let my kids. And it had reached the point that I was afraid that was going to happen,” Andrea said. So, she applied for SNAP once again. Andrea is one of nearly 40 million Americans currently using the program.“It provides individuals and families who have lower income with access to food benefits on a monthly basis. It’s transferred on an electronic benefit card, that can be used just like a debit card at a grocery store,” said Karla Maraccini, the Division Director of Food and Energy Assistance Programs at Colorado Department of Human Services. The Colorado Department of Human Services is preparing for a change to the SNAP program, expected to go into effect April first. “A proposed rule was finalized regarding requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents. These are adults that are age 18 to 49 who do not have a dependent child in their care under the age of 18,” said Katherine Smith, the Division Director of the Employment of Benefits Division. Under current rules, able-bodied adults can only receive three months of SNAP benefits in a three-year period if they work less than 20 hours a week. However, there has been an exception to that rule. “Based on unemployment rates and other economic factors, states have been able to get waivers so that those able-bodied adults without dependents did not have to meet those work requirements,” Smith said. The administration’s change will make it more difficult to get approval for that waiver. The Agriculture Department estimates it would cut benefits for roughly 688,000 SNAP recipients, which in turn would save the federal government around .5 billion over five years.On Twitter, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue explained why he thinks the country will benefit from the change. He tweeted “the USDA’s rule lays the groundwork for the expectation that work capable Americans re-enter the workforce, where there are currently more job openings than people to fill them.” Secretary Perdue says the program was intended to provide assistance through difficult times, not as a way of life. Andrea argues the situation is isn’t so simple. “If you aren’t eating enough, then you can’t be healthy enough to even work,” Andrea said. She says SNAP is already a work-support tool that ensures families access to nutritious foods so they can focus their energy on supporting their family. Since she has children, she won’t personally be impacted by the SNAP change, but she knows quite a few people who will be. “I think that you should know that there’s a very good chance that you might know somebody.”  3364

CA?ON CITY, Colo. – Thousands have come through the gates of the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility. But what happens when they walk out? The prison has dozens of programs meant to help the inmates become valued members of society. One program – involving dogs – is called the Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program. Lawrence Trujillo and Zachery Montoya are master dog trainers. They've have been training dogs at the corrections center for five years. “We are with these dogs seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” Trujillo said. They teach the dogs how to follow commands, and how to be on their best behavior. It’s a very coveted job. “Some of these guys haven’t seen a dog in 20 years,” Montoya said. However, getting into the program isn’t easy. “In order to be considered they actually have to apply for the job. They have to meet certain criteria – they have to have a GED – because we’re required them to read information and process it. And they have to be on their best behavior documented for at least six months," K-9 supervisor Michele Wayland said. According to Wayland, it takes about a year to achieve a master handler certification. “We get a dog buddy, and we learn from a master trainer. We go through about 14 months of book work, we have tests in their monthly – hands on tests with the dogs as we progress as trainers – and we have to pass each one of those tests to become a master trainer,” Trujillo said. The guys say they gain more than just life skills. They're also helping families who haven’t been able to effectively train their dogs. “Coming to prison is not so fun, but being able to give something back is very rewarding,” Montoya said. Since the program was created in 2002, inmates have trained nearly 13,000 dogs. A majority of them come from private families who help fund the program through boarding and training fees. “There is no taxpayer dollar supporting this program, so we have to float our own boat,” Wayland said. The program has seen a lot of success the past couple decades. Wayland says Colorado was one of the first, if not the first state to start K-9 training at prisons. Now, they're all across the country. “There actually is a K-9 program in prisons in every state of the union,” Wayland said. The positive results of the program can be seen in the inmates who are hired. “I didn’t have a lot of skills before I came to prison, so this is something I could definitely I could take with me and do out there. There’s been many guys who have left and have been successful doing this one the streets,” Montoya said. Whether working at a shelter, a kennel, or starting their own training business, both Montoya and Trujillo say they’d love to continue working with dogs once they get out of prison.
