CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Illinois at Chicago campus was on edge Monday after a 19-year-old kinesiology student was found strangled to death in a parking garage over the weekend.Police have detained a person of interest, they say. After Ruth George's family reported to police Saturday morning that the sophomore had not been heard from since the night before, authorities tracked her phone to a parking garage near the school's library, quad and engineering facilities, UIC Police Chief Kevin Booker said in a statement."Our investigation has determined that Ms. George was alone when she entered the Halsted Street Parking Garage on Nov. 23 at approximately 1:35 a.m. A person of interest entered the garage shortly after Ms. George," Booker's statement said. The person of interest has no ties to the university, the chief said.Police say they believe foul play was involved, but they've neither named the person of interest nor announced what, if any, charges she or he will face.George's cause of death was strangulation, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said."The traumatic loss of life of one of our community members is very difficult to comprehend and surely invokes a range of emotions for all of us," 1239

DENVER, Colorado — If you are planning on hiking in a national park or head to the airport to travel this weekend be prepared. Federal workers are warning that the government shutdown is starting to impact safety."For air traffic controllers, you only get one take,” said James Marinitti with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. “They work in a mistake-free environment where we are expected to be right 100 percent of the time.”With 3,000 air traffic support staff being told not to come to work there are fewer safety inspectors. That can lead to delays like repairing runway lights that guide pilots to the installation of new technology that helps controllers communicate with pilots."Radar, preventative maintenance -- these types of things that will get delayed as the shutdown continues because the workers are not there to keep the system healthy," Marinitti said.TSA employees are among the thousands of essential government workers required to show up without pay. Senior officials have confirmed with CNN that hundreds of TSA employees are calling out sick since the shutdown. We reached out to the TSA at Denver International Airport about the impacts but have not heard back.At Rocky Mountain National Park, visitors are arriving only to be disappointed.“We are out here to visit. We see the sign and realize it's closed. We came all the way from Vancouver, Canada, and it's kinda disappointing,” said Stanley Marayan.Trash cans are locked up at the park and roads are closed because there are no workers to plow them. The National Park Service is warning visitors to use extreme caution during the shutdown because emergency services are limited. At Yosemite National Park, one death wasn’t reported for a week because of the government shutdown."America is great. We want to explore America, so for us, I think this is crazy they are closing the parks. Nature is beautiful here," Marayan said. 1964

Dollar Tree/Family Dollar and Dollar General will pay the State of New York .2 million as part of a settlement for selling expired drugs and obsolete motor oil, the N.Y. Attorney General announced on Monday. The Attorney General's Office said that investigators found over-the-counter drugs that were months beyond their expiration dates at Family Dollar, Dollar General and Dollar Tree locations as well as a number of motor oils that are not suitable for vehicles for engines made after 1988 at Dollar General. Investigators even found at multiple Dollar General locations a type of motor oil, DG SAE-30, which is not suitable for engines built after 1930. “It’s a tough pill for New Yorkers to swallow that the over-the-counter drugs they were buying may have been expired,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “New York consumers have a right to expect that products on store shelves are safe, fresh and suitable for their advertised use. "These settlements will ensure that Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar will not only pay both a substantial fine and damages, but, more importantly, update their business practices to comply with the law so that no expired over-the-counter drugs are sold to a New York consumer again.”Dollar Tree and Family Dollar merged in 2015, but run separate operations.Dollar Tree/Family Dollar will pay a .1 million fine, and Dollar General will pay 0,000.The stores also agreed to do the following in New York:Maintaining and utilizing a system for electronically recording and tracking the expiration dates on merchandise delivered to their distribution centers,Maintaining and enforcing policies and procedures that require employees to rotate stock when restocking store shelves, as well as conducting weekly inspections of store shelves to remove any expired products,Conducting monthly audits of each retail store to check for expired products, andInstituting third-party audits of 10% of the chains’ New York stores for a period of at least oneyear to check for expired over-the-counter drugs. 2074
