SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students have been released from school following reports of shots fired in the area around Kearny Senior High School Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, officers were alerted to the reports around 2:20 p.m. So far, no one has been taken into custody and police are still searching for a scene. Mesa College Drive is also closed from Ashford to Armory while police search the area. Kearny Senior High School is located on the 1900 block of Komet Way near San Diego Mesa College. 523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is one step closer to creating a regional energy company that would serve as an alternative to San Diego Gas and Electric.The city's Environment Committee voted 3-1 Thursday to advance the framework for the energy company to the full City Council, which it will consider Tuesday, The proposal, called Community Choice Aggregation, would include the city of San Diego and other entities such as Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach and La Mesa. It would be managed under what is called a Joint Powers Authority. San Diego Gas and Electric would still deliver the energy, but the JPA would decide where it comes from. The city has previously estimated that it could save customers 5 percent under their SDG&E bills. Customers would be automatically enrolled, and would pay SDG&E exit fees (they can opt out of enrollment). The entity could help the city reach its climate goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. It needs to get its proposal to the state Public Utilities Commission by the end of the year in order to start service in 2021. 1103

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 10News team is celebrating the return of morning reporter Marie Coronel."I'm so glad to be back here with you guys," she told the morning 10News team in an emotional appearance in the studio Wednesday.About three and half years ago, Marie and 10News photographer Mike Gold were in Mira Mesa preparing for a live report on storm damage when heavy branches snapped off a massive eucalyptus tree crushing the both of them. Mike was able to recover from his injuries and was back to work a few months later, but it's taken years for Marie to recover from multiple injuries and return to the newsroom."This has been a crazy long journey...it's been so tough emotionally, physically, and me going through physical therapy, then doing all of this while raising our three little boys," she said.During her recovery, the native San Diegan stayed active and connected in the community through social media. But Marie acknowledged that her return was met with some jitters when 10News anchor Jim Patton asked what it felt like to be back."I was like the new kid walking in yesterday but then now in day two I'm like, 'let's get back to business.'"Marie credits her recovery and perseverance to the enormous support from family, friends, faith, co-workers, and the 10News – ABC San Diego KGTV viewers, she said."I’ve kept my eyes and ears on our community, and there are so many stories I can’t wait to start reporting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of opening fire into a Hillcrest business has been found incompetent to stand trial. Stefano Markell Parker, 29, was facing attempted murder charges in San Diego in connection with the shooting at Golden Dragon Asian Bistro in February of 2019. Witnesses in the area that night described a man they say stood outside the restaurant armed with a rifle and opened fire. No one was shot. Witnesses say the gunman then changed clothes, providing a description. Police arrested Parker in the area later in the night. A spokesperson at the Jefferson County Jail in Alabama previously confirmed to 10News that Parker was in custody in recent years. In 2016, he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana and drug trafficking charges. In 2017, he faced charges of distributing methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Court records also show that Parker faced capital murder charges when he was a teenager in connection with a shooting from a vehicle.
