It's been said that 2020 will be known as "The Death of The Working Mom" as many find it is not humanly possible to manage distance learning, a career, and life at home. A digital marketplace for working mothers aims to make sure that women remain in the workforce and stay supported.As a single mom of three, Chandra Sanders does it all. And all was fine until the pandemic. “Due to COVID-19, my most recent project that I accepted was in commercial and retail, and that industry was seriously impacted from COVID-19 and was the first to shut down. Due to that shutdown, my project was shut down along with my income,” Sanders said.She refused to be negative though. And while stressed and anxious about her income, she turned to the internet.“I found the Mom Project doing a regular Google search online,” Sanders recalls. When she found it, The Mom Project happened to be hiring for its own team. She landed a job and couldn't be happier. Chief Community Officer Colleen Curtis says The Mom Project has now served over 2,000 companies and connected thousands of moms with employment.“People are coming to the realization that this can’t be how it is for everyone, forever,” Curtis said.The Mom Project was born in 2016, by you guessed it, a mom. Who, while on maternity leave, read a statistic. It said that 43 percent of skilled women leave the workforce after becoming mothers. Founder Allison Robinson didn't want moms like her to choose between a career and a family. Four years later and the digital marketplace is seeing change.“We’ve seen an incredible response from both sides of what I would say the marketplace, as a mom, we knew that the pain point was there for moms and it was really that we were feeling the tensions between being a great mom and being great at work but what we’re seeing is the incredible demand from companies,” Curtis said.When we asked what challenges women face now, as they navigate through the pandemic, Curtis says The Mom Project is noticing some tough things. “It's been disproportionately difficult for moms, specifically moms of color, but also, just moms. The emotional labor of adapting to new situations: work from home, kids are now home, all the way from babies to college kids, and your village has been stripped away,” Curtis said.Chandra Sanders says part of her new role at The Mom Project is to help other moms. Specifically, to help moms of color find and achieve her same success.“I must say it's the first job that I’ve had that I’ve felt welcome as a mom, as a woman, I didn’t have to hide that and as woman of color I didn’t have to hide that either,” Sanders said.Sanders says her former roles in commercial and retail industry were challenging. "Being a Black woman in an industry where I’m the only Black woman you have to be very careful about what you say, how you dress, the tone of voice that you’re using and you have to be careful about everything that you do,” Sanders said.Now she's on a mission to both change the workforce and pave the way for others.“Many companies now have these initiatives, want to hire a diverse workforce they really want that- their human resource departments are in charge of reaching out to the mom project and to candidates to ensure their workforce is diverse.”And she says, she's been there. Laid off, struggling as a single mom. She wants others to know, focusing on the good and the positive will help propel you forward.“I can do it, and I did it and we’re going to make sure other people can do it too,” Sanders said. Interior Department Secretary Ryan Zinke signed an order Friday morning aiming to expand access for hunters and fishers to public lands and monuments.In what is being described as an "expansive" secretarial order, Zinke's rule would ultimately allow broader access across the board to hunters and fishers on public lands managed by the Interior Department, according to the order.A section of the order also amends the national monument management plan to include or expand hunting and fishing opportunities to the "extent practicable under the law."The order cites a 2007 executive order from President George W. Bush to "facilitate the expansion and enhancement of hunting opportunities and the management of game species and their habitat." It directs agencies to to create a report and plan to streamline how best to enhance and expand access to hunting and fishing on public lands.The Interior Department oversees national parks, wildlife refuges and other federal lands.The secretarial order also aims to expand educational outreach for hunting and fishing to "under served" communities such as minorities and veterans as well as increase volunteer access to federal lands."Today's secretarial order is the latest example of how the Trump administration is actively moving to support hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation on public lands," Zinke said in a statement."Hunting and fishing is a cornerstone of the American tradition and hunters and fishers of America are the backbone of land and wildlife conservation," he said.Interior said Obama administration policies were too restrictive."Through management plans made under the previous administration, which did not appreciate access to hunting and target shooting like this administration does, access and usage has been restricted," said Interior spokeswoman Heather Swift.Zinke's rule will not have to go through a formal rule-making process.It is the second major action from Interior in the last few weeks.In August, Zinke recommended shrinking the boundaries of a handful of national monuments, but stopped short of suggesting the elimination of any federal designations following a review ordered by President Donald Trump.At Trump's direction, Zinke earlier this year launched a review of 27 national monuments, a controversial move that could undo protections for millions of acres of federal lands, as well as limits on oil and gas or other energy production. Interim Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson will be tasked with regaining the fractured trust of Aurora, Colorado residents after she was appointed the city's permanent chief of police during a city council meeting Monday night."I am honored, humbled, and energized by the trust the city manager, mayor, and council has placed in me. Instagram announced Tuesday they were kicking off National Bullying Prevention Month by testing two new features that combat users writing comments that are considered bullying and harassing.The social media platform said in a blog post that one of the new features would automatically hide similar, negative comments that have already been reported." We know from research that, while people don't want to be exposed to negative comments, they want more transparency into the types of words that are hidden," Instagram said in the blog post.To see the remarks, Instagram says you can tap on "view hidden comments."Instagram added that they've also expanded their existing systems to include "an additional warning when people repeatedly attempt to post potentially offensive comments."Since launching comment warning, the company said they'd seen a shift in user's behaviors when providing real-time feedback as they are writing negative comments. 956
It may not be a hospital, but these essential workers are on the frontlines teaching children while schools are shut down and relieving parents who can’t work from home.“We can be open for those parents who have nowhere else to go, who have no one else to turn to,” said Katie Taves, the lead teacher for remote learning at Boingo’s Academy in Visalia, California.This program is making an incredible impact on parents like Lorraine Filimeno. The single mother of five is also an essential worker. She helps families sign up for unemployment benefits and financial assistance.“We are out in the community. We deal with people every day, but we’re also parents,” said Filimeno.When schools closed, Filimeno needed some help herself figuring out how to balance work and her kids’ remote learning.“My employer wasn’t going to wait for me. You know, everyone is replaceable,” she said. The mother was worried she might end up needing help from her own office. “Was I going to have to get on unemployment? I had seen people come into our office and start asking for applications and being worried, and I said, ‘Is that going to be me?’” recalled Filimeno.She reached out to the day care her daughters went to for after-school care and found the teachers were ready to help.“If it wasn’t for child care like Boingo’s, I don’t know what I would do,” she said.Before COVID-19 hit, a large part of the day care was used as an after-school playground. Now, it’s turned into a remote learning classroom for dozens of students in different schools and grades.The Boingo’s Academy pre-school got a waiver from the state to take on extra elementary school students for all-day distance learning and spots filled up almost instantly.“Some of these kids can’t even read yet, let alone find the link you’re telling them to find. They need somebody there with the computer,” said Taves.This relief comes with a cost. For Filimeno, keeping the career she loves and paying for childcare meant training for a second job.“Without a second income, I cannot afford childcare for 40 hours a week for three kids. It’s very costly," she said. "I know there’s resources out there for me-- cash aid and food stamps--but as I’ve worked for over 25 years. I had gotten off of those assistances."Now, the single mom is worried, like so many parents in her shoes, that COVID-19 will erase her years of financial stability.“When this all hit, it felt almost like I was rewinding my life. I wanted to give up as a parent and say, ‘I’m done with working. I can’t afford this.’ But you look at your children, and you say, ‘I gotta get back together, I gotta get going,” said Filimeno.The mother even battled COVID-19 and was sick for a month, but now, she is back to work and is making sure she can provide for her kids.With the many layers of stress falling onto parents and teachers, the children have a tough time, too.“When I see a child not able to follow along, it’s heartbreaking,” said Taves. “Sometimes, it just becomes so overwhelming and they’re just not able to do it, and there’s not much I can do but encourage them. Their little spirits get broken; it’s so sad."But, these teachers won’t give up, and these parents can’t give up, because they’re working for a future only these children can dream up. 3286
