MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Murder hornets have had their time in the spotlight. Now, scientists say they've discovered “zombie cicadas.”It's a playful name from researchers at West Virginia University, who say they've found that a parasitic fungus, called Massospora, can play mind games on cicadas, causing them to infect others.Researcher showed that the psychedelic fungus can manipulate male cicadas into flicking their wings like females – a mating call – which tempts unsuspecting male cicadas and infects them.The fungus contains chemicals like those found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to research published in the journal PLOS Pathogens.“Essentially, the cicadas are luring others into becoming infected because their healthy counterparts are interested in mating,” said Brian Lovett, study co-author and post-doctoral researcher with the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. “The bioactive compounds may manipulate the insect to stay awake and continue to transmit the pathogen for longer.”The authors of the study compared the effects of the fungus to a “B-horror movie.” Massospora spores gnaw away at a cicada’s genitals, butt and abdomen, replacing them with fungal spores. Then, Lovett says they “wear away like an eraser on a pencil.”Lovett also compared the transmission of the behavior-modifying virus to rabies. He says both rabies and entomopathogenic fungi enlist their living hosts for successful “active host transmission.”“When you're infected with rabies, you become aggressive, you become afraid of water and you don't swallow,” Lovett said. “The virus is passed through saliva and all of those symptoms essentially turn you into a rabies-spreading machine where you're more likely to bite people."In that sense, Lovett says many of us are familiar with active host transmission.“Since we are also animals like insects, we like to think we have complete control over our decisions and we take our freewill for granted,” he said. “But when these pathogens infect cicadas, it's very clear that the pathogen is pulling the behavioral levers of the cicada to cause it to do things which are not in the interest of the cicada but is very much in the interest of the pathogen.”Researchers say cicada nymphs could encounter Massospora in their 17th year as they emerge from the ground to molt into adults or on their way down to feed on roots for 17 years.“The fungus could more or less lay in wait inside its host for the next 17 years until something awakens it, perhaps a hormone cue, where it possibly lays dormant and asymptomatic in its cicada host,” said co-author Matthew Kasson.As grotesque as an infected decaying cicada sounds, researchers say they’re generally harmless to humans. They also reproduce at such a rate that the fungi’s extermination of hordes of cicadas has little effect on their overall population.“They're very docile,” Lovett said. “You can walk right up to one, pick it up to see if it has the fungus (a white to yellowish plug on its back end) and set it back down. They’re not a major pest in any way. They’re just a really interesting quirky insect that’s developed a bizarre lifestyle." 3172

According to police, three suspects entered the Eclipse Jewelry store just before 12:30 p.m. The suspects, only described as police as three black men, smashed three to six jewelry cases and got away with an unknown amount of jewelry. Police are looking into whether or not this incident is linked to a string of jewelry store robberies in late 2018 and early 2017. National walkout protests are planned at schools across the country on Wednesday in support of students affected by the Parkland, Florida school shooting.Students, teachers, parents and others associated with schools are participating to push for legislation that aims to protect public places from gun violence.The walkout is organized by Women's March Youth EMPOWER, and the group is calling for those who support the effort to walk out of schools for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. in each time zone. Nashville will be home to Amazon’s new executive operations center -- bringing 5,000 jobs to the area and making it the largest jobs announcement in Tennessee's history.  Amazon made the announcement Tuesday morning, saying the location would be its new Operations Center of Excellence and be the company's headquarters for its logistics group. Amazon has chosen New York City and Northern Virginia to split duty as its second headquarters.  Nashville will serve as the company’s Retail Operations division, which will be located in downtown just north of The Gulch in the Nashville Yards development -- a billion dollar project between Church Street and West End. The one million square foot office space will house the tech and management functions of the Retail Operations division, including customer fulfillment, customer service, transportation, and supply chain, amongst others.“Amazon has spent the past year searching the nation for the best possible locations to expand and it chose Tennessee because of our business-friendly policies, low taxes and skilled workforce," Governor Bill Haslam said in a statement. The company is making an estimated 3 million capital investment over seven years and creating 5,000 net new full-time jobs with an average pay of .32 an hour, which is more than 0,000 a year.Currently, Amazon employs approximately 2,500 people in the Nashville region across five fulfillment and sortation centers. Months of uncertainty and waves of a deadly virus don’t really seem like a good prelude to a strong Christmas season. However, if you take a look at Christmas tree and decoration sales, they tell a different story.It is one of the busiest years for Christmas tree sellers and farmers, and most of these businesses were not expecting a busy year.“Sales have been up a lot,” said Christopher Gregory. “We initially thought maybe people were buying early. Now, we think there are just more people buying and they’re buying early!”Gregory has owned of Elsie and Sons Christmas Trees, located in Boston, for 47 years and never expected this holiday season to be one of his busiest. In fact, just a few weeks ago, he worried about being able to sell anything this season.“We were afraid there would be a shutdown, that we would get all the Christmas trees in and the day after they’ll shut down,” said Gregory.However, that is so far from how this season has actually panned out. Sales for Christmas trees, wreaths, and almost every holiday decoration are selling so fast he worries about running out of stock now.“We are running out of stuff and it is only the 8th of December,” Gregory added.The Boston Christmas tree seller explained local farmers have stopped cutting trees, so to get more trees, he has to place an order from a tree farm in Canada. Even with this additional order, he is anticipating still not have enough trees for all the demand and says he’ll likely end his season early.All across the country, Christmas tree sales are up almost 30 percent, according to a survey of tree retailers done by Evercore ISI. It seems people are not only buying more Christmas trees, but they are focused on buying bigger ones and spending more on additional season decorations.The uptick is notably unexpected since typically during economic downturns consumers pull back on unnecessary spending. They have not historically pulled back from Christmas tree shopping, but most economists and business owners would likely have forecasted a decline in spending on additional décor.That is, in fact, what Gregory forecasted for his business this season.“It’s a comfort to people, I think, observing the tradition, decorating the house and so on.
