A Cincinnati police officer outed an undercover colleague to the nightclub owner under investigation and concealed ,000 in off-duty income from the IRS, according to federal prosecutors.Quianna Campbell, 39, was arrested Friday. She stands charged with lying to federal agents and submitting false tax returns.According to the criminal complaint filed against Campbell in United States District Court, federal agents first became aware of her during a 2015 investigation into Cincinnati nightclubs’ potential involvement in organized drug trafficking and money-laundering. “During the course of this investigation, information was received that individuals associated with nightclubs had been or were currently being warned of police activities and were in essence being tipped off and possibly protected by members of the Cincinnati Police Department,” an IRS investigator wrote. Investigators later uncovered text messages in which a nightclub owner texted Campbell to ask about a specific person who had visited the club. “She’s an officer….” Campbell wrote back. She also discussed possible reasons police would be investigating the club, writing: “They work on random nights and go into different bars. If they come back again next weekend I would say yes.”In an interview with federal investigators, Campbell denied sending the messages and said she would never out an undercover officer. In 2018, according to the complaint, Campbell would admit she had also concealed a total of ,000 she had earned working off-duty details between 2015-17. She didn’t report the total to the IRS in her taxes, “because if she had reported the income she would not have received as large of tax refunds she received from the federal government,” the IRS investigator wrote.If convicted on both charges, Campbell could spent up to eight years in federal prison."The Cincinnati Police Department is aware of the indictment and arrest of Police Officer Quianna Campbell this afternoon," a department spokesperson wrote in a statement Friday afternoon. A House panel passed a bill Wednesday to authorize additional funding for the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund until 2090, one day after comedian Jon Stewart sharply criticized members of Congress for not attending a subcommittee hearing on the issue and gave an emotional plea to extend the funding.The bill passed on a voice vote without opposition and now heads to the House floor for the full chamber to vote. A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico before dawn on Tuesday, killing one man, injuring at least eight other people and collapsing buildings in the southern part of the island. The quake was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, part of a 10-day series of temblors spawned by the grinding of tectonic plates along three faults beneath southern Puerto Rico. Seismologists say it's impossible to predict when the quakes will stop. The 6.4-magnitude quake cut power as power plants shut down to protect themselves. Authorities said two plants suffered light damage and they expected power to be restored later Tuesday. It was the second straight day in which a signifcant quake struck the island. On Monday, a 5.8 magnitude quake shook the island, causing minor damage.Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vazquez signed a series of executive orders Tuesday declaring a state of emergency on the island and activating the National Guard.The Associated Press reports that a 73-year-old man was killed when a wall in his home collapsed on top of him. Whether or not to vaccinate children against measles by using the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) shot was a debate in Washington Wednesday.Two of the nation’s leading health experts, who expressed confusion at the growing numbers of people choosing not to vaccinate against measles, testified before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Nancy Messonnier believe a spread of misinformation among those pockets of people against vaccinating is the culprit. A common argument from anti-vaxx groups is that the vaccine can cause brain swelling in children. The two health officials clarified that in rare instances with underlying immune deficiencies, an MMR vaccine is not recommended. Dr. Messonnier says a doctor would be able to determine if a child fell into that category. Amid the national debate, a Texas state representative is now pushing for legislation that would allow more parents to opt out of vaccines, arguing to the Texas Observer that if a child gets measles, parents could simply use "antibiotics and that kind of stuff" to prevent deaths.
