BOULDER, Colo. — The COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Colorado Boulder is now the largest in the state, with 1,198 positive cases among students and 104 with probable cases of the virus, according to the latest outbreak data released by state officials Wednesday.Twelve staffers have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data.CU Boulder on Wednesday switched to fully-remote classes for at least the next two weeks, as university officials work to curb the spread of COVID-19 among students, with cases on the rise and isolation spaces dwindling on campus.Philip DiStefano, CU Boulder chancellor, said in a statement Monday that the move was "in the immediate interest" of the campus community's health. Students are being asked to remain in university housing, and employees will work remotely, if possible.University provost Russell Moore said in a news conference Monday that officials have seen fewer COVID-19 cases in recent days, but "unfortunately, the number of cases is not dropping enough."Students can now face a 10-day suspension — or longer — for violating COVID-19 protocols. Interim executive vice chancellor Patrick O'Rourke said 14 students are currently suspended as they go through the discipline process for health violations. The increased enforcement, O'Rourke said, has led to some change in behavior among students off campus, with fewer violations over the weekend.CU Boulder wasn't the only university to appear on the state's updated outbreak list Wednesday, though it was, by far, the largest.Eight outbreaks were reported at the University of Denver, including several sororities, the gymnastics team and a residential building. The case numbers in those outbreaks ranged from 3-9.Two sororities and a fraternity at Colorado State University also reported outbreaks, with the Kappa Sigma fraternity having the most cases at 13 confirmed and four probable. While Colorado has seen a large spike in cases among 18-25-year-olds over the last two weeks, State Epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy said there was also “concerning” increases among other age groups that are more vulnerable to more-severe bouts with the virus.“Even among other age groups, we’re seeing rapid acceleration of the virus,” Herlihy said.She and Gov. Jared Polis said that the increases in cases – 12 of the last 14 days have seen increasing case numbers in the state – were similar to the spike seen after the July 4 holiday but that they were still investigating the exact cause and if the Labor Day holiday gatherings were attributable.But Polis also said that it was possible that Coloradans had again reduced their caution in wearing masks, staying 6 feet apart and not attending large gatherings. In an age of podcasts and audio books, you might think this tiny nonprofit radio station would never make it. But not only is this New Orleans institution still on the air, it's thriving. It’s all thanks to donations, an army of volunteers and listeners that depend on the very unique services they provide.This rare radio station—located inside an old Victorian home—plays just about anything, except music. That’s not the only thing that makes WRBH Radio unique; the station uses their resources to help the blind. "The mission is to provide current information for the visually impaired," says Natalia Gonzalez with WRBH Radio for the Blind. Every day, a stream of volunteers at the station bring listeners just about anything that comes in print, including news headlines, grocery ads and even horoscopes. Gonzalez says the station provides local news, as well as national news. That also includes the funnies from national newspapers. Gonzalez says one of the best things about working at WRBH Radio for the Blind is meeting all the people who volunteer, like Mike McNulty, who is a volunteer reader. “My grandfather on my father’s side lost his vision, and it literally took a huge part of his life,” says McNulty. “So yeah, it kind of spoke to me, you know?” The station and its volunteers are making impacts on people’s lives—people like Tim Lindsley, who lost his vision later in life. Lindsley, a loyal listener in Thibodaux, Louisiana, says not only does WRBH bring him the news he can no longer read, it also brings a companion, of sorts, into his home. “Yeah, well, you’re definitely not isolated,” he explains. “You feel a lot more part of the world; part of what’s going on.” For Gonzalez, that’s exactly what she hopes her radio station can bring to viewers. “That it's a voice in a room that's comforting,” she says. “Not only is it providing information, but it’s also assuaging the loneliness that people who are shut in or visually impaired or people who just rely on others to take them places, you know?”There’s something magical about this place, according to Gonzalez. 2110

“Happened nine times in a five year period,” said Dawnie McNamee, a former hiring manager. Stood up. “We got to the point where we were actually surprised that someone would actually show up on their first day [because] it got to be so frequent,” said Craig Cummings, a former restaurant manager. No show. “You go home and you wonder, what did I miss about this person,” said McNamee Ghosted. We’re not talking about dates. People aren’t showing up to their first day of work. “It’s like dating, right? Well I had coffee with you, I don’t like you, I’m going to block you. And that’s kind of how you feel like if you’re a hiring manager,” said McNamee. McNamee is a former hiring manager and now works for a payroll company in Colorado. She says she sees this all the time. “What I found, especially since the stock market has recovered, and jobs now aren’t as rare as they used to be, is there’s a lot of people out there that’ll come in, nail it on the interview. You’ll go through the hiring process, all the paperwork and then their first day they will not show up.” She’s right. Unemployment is at 3.5 percent, the lowest it’s been since in 50 years. That means some employers can’t find someone to take a job. Searching for a new hire can be a little bit like dating, you never know exactly what you’re going to get, it’s expensive, and they may not even show up. I went to a job fair and asked people looking for work if they’d ever consider doing this to a potential employer. “If I had a job offer in hand that I’d accepted," said Julie Ziobro who's looking for a job. “Absolutely not,” said Nathaniel Diamond, a job seeker. I come from a generation, and I grew up, making phone calls, don’t text,” said Cummings. “I definitely wouldn’t do it without communicating; that’s not fair,” said Ziobro. “Just let them know, like, 'Hey, I got a job that better suits my skill set, and I’m going to take that one instead,'” said Joshua Curry, a job seeker.No one was ready to admit they’d leave an employer hanging out to dry. But it doesn’t mean there are no other signs. “We really want to take a look at their job history to look at, are they a job hopper? Are they moving around every three months or every six months with different companies. To me that would signal someone is always looking for that next best thing,” says Keely Teynor, who runs her own hiring firm. Teynor says there are a few things employers can do, including looking at someone’s job history. “Even in this really tight labor market, the unemployment rate is so low, we kind of have to find this nice balance of having multiple steps in the process to show they’re really invested and interested in this opportunity,” she says.She says that process helps her avoid the dreaded no show on an employee’s first day. McNamee can still remember the sting of being stood up. “People are excited to have new hires come in and be a part of your team," she says. "And so when you have people not show up, leaves a little mud on your face.“I’ve stayed awake quite a few nights wondering about that what could I have done better.” 3127
Living in a world where business revolves around technology, cybersecurity has become a more common issue. Studies show the greatest risk for a data breach is employee negligence. “Somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of successful attacks on organizations now stem from phishing,” cybersecurity expert Ross Jordan said. Ross Jordan with High Touch Technologies says phishing is a way for foreign groups or companies to gain private information from a company by targeting the employee usually through email. Scammers have become advanced enough to appear as a person or organization you trust asking for your password or credit card number. “Phishing is something that’s usually sent out by bots. Literally just blasted out to hundreds if not thousands of emails at a time. And they’re hoping for that one na?ve person to follow the link, and when they do, you’re literally opening the doors to the kingdom,” Jordan said. Employees are often tricked because the email contains a reactionary ask telling somebody they need to share personal information right away. “They’re taking advantage of our human nature. And when somebody needs your help, and somebody needs an action from you, you want to respond, you want to do something,” Jordan said. According to Jordan, the best way to prevent these attacks is to train your employees. Commercial General Contractor, Pinkard Construction, is one company leading by example. Technology Manager Eric Schmeer says models that used to be on paper have now become fully digitized using laser scanners, drones and 360 degree cameras. “All of these devices, all this information, it’s all computerized, it’s all digital, it’s all connected to the internet. And so when you’re running these multi-million dollar projects and all that information is digital, it’s really, really important to protect it,” Schmeer said. For that reason, Pinkard Construction takes time to educate its employees on what an attack could look like. “Teach people just the fundamentals about how to analyze an email, and determine whether it looks phishy or not. And what to do when they’re not sure about links and whether they should click them, and how to figure out where they go,” Schmeer said. The company also fosters an environment where employees are encouraged to come forward with questions. “Nobody is ever hesitant to forward an entire technology team here and say ‘Hey is this legitimate? Can I click this link? What’s gonna happen here?’” Knowing you could be just one click away from killing your company, it’s always OK to ask for help. “Just ask. It’s very simple.
