SALT LAKE CITY — A Halloween protest party scheduled for Saturday night near Salt Lake City has been canceled, with organizers claiming harassment and intimidation led to its downfall."The Protest on Halloween" party was promoted via social media by a group calling itself Utah Tonight. The party featured four DJs and a guarantee that attendees would not have their faces shown in photos. As recent as last week, the group said the party's purpose was to promote "mental health and to raise a voice against those who are using fear and misleading information to gain power and control in our lives. Life must go on. COVID-19 is real, but it shouldn't be the end of normalcy!”However, as COVID-19 cases continued to soar in Utah over recent weeks, the image of thousands partying up close no doubt became a Halloween nightmare to officials.Monday afternoon, the Utah Tonight group posted to its Instagram page that the party has been called off. Saying "thousands" had purchased tickets to the event, the organizers acknowledged the rise in cases may have played a role in the decision while also attacking government officials and the media."The Utah Tonight team has fought tirelessly to provide individuals with an evening of normalcy and enjoyment during this year of uncertainty." the post read. "...we must acknowledge that even following every known guideline to combat COVID-19 would be insufficient to some.""We find it both disheartening and concerning that some within our society have allowed fear to supplant basic rights of assembly, giving individuals within the media and some public servants the ability to control what we consider to be a 'pursuit of happiness.'"The cancellation post claims the group was forced to call off the party while other well-attended events like the state fair, rodeos, gyms and haunted houses are able to remain open."What should be a fair and impartial application of guidelines for all people has become an exercise of political rhetoric and fear-mongering." the group states. The group ends by accusing those in power, including the media, of harassing and intimidating people to shut down the event."It is our hope that you may not find your 'pursuit of happiness' on the unspoken list of restricted activities in the State of Utah."This article was written by Sydney Glenn for KSTU. 2340

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The mother of a U.S. Navy veteran from California sentenced to 10 years in prison by the government of Iran said Tuesday he has lost his appeal and she is worried that he is being forgotten by the U.S. government.Michael R. White was convicted of insulting Iran's supreme leader and posting private information online. He was the first American known to be imprisoned in Iran after President Donald Trump took office. Few other details are known about his case.Joanne White, speaking through a family spokesman, said she was disappointed Trump did not mention her son or other Americans held in Iran when he spoke to the United Nations General Assembly.RELATED: Wife of Imperial Beach man arrested in Iran recalls suspicious behaviorFamily spokesman Jonathan Franks said Joanne White has not had any way to communicate with her son and she relies on officials with the Swiss government who meet with him when possible. She wants to ask the Iranian government to let him call her. The White House has not contacted her, he added."I think her feeling is it is now time for his case to get as much attention as those in which the president has successfully brought people home," Franks said.Trump has secured the release of a dozen Americans held hostage or unjustly imprisoned overseas since taking office.Franks said Michael White, 46, recently had surgery to remove melanoma and his mother is concerned about his health, especially in the poor conditions in which he is being held in Iran.ORIGINAL STORY: Navy veteran from Imperial Beach being held in IranThe family has been raising money through a GoFundMe page to send to the Swiss government to get him adequate food, Franks said."We're exploring all opportunities and continue to hope that President Trump will personally show interest," the family's attorney, Mark Zaid, said in an email to The Associated Press.Joanne White said her son, who lived in Imperial Beach, California, went to Iran to see a woman she described as his girlfriend and had booked a July 27 flight back home to San Diego via United Arab Emirates. She filed a missing person report with the State Department after he did not board the flight. She said he had been undergoing treatment for a neck tumor and has asthma.White worked as a cook in the U.S. Navy and left the service about a decade ago.It remains difficult for Americans to get visas to Iran, 40 years after the Islamic Revolution and the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis, but Franks said Michael White traveled there legally with one.Others being held in Iran are:— Iranian-American Siamak Namazi and his octogenarian father Baquer, a former UNICEF representative who once served as governor of Iran's oil-rich Khuzestan province. Both are serving 10-year sentences on espionage charges.— Iranian-American art dealer Karan Vafadari and his Iranian wife, Afarin Neyssari.—Chinese-American graduate student Xiyue Wang was sentenced to 10 years after being accused of infiltrating the country while doing doctoral research on Iran's Qajar dynasty.— Nizar Zakka, a U.S. permanent resident from Lebanon who advocated for internet freedom and has done work for the U.S. government. 3185

SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program. The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? Why is it telling kids they have sexual rights apart from their parents?” Bever said. The group is scheduled to hold a rally at the district’s office in University Heights at 4 p.m., just before the School Board’s meeting. 1075
