SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report out Thursday shows that the United States will gain 23 new million cities within the next year, and San Diego didn't shy away from the list. According to Zillow, a million city is defined as a city with a median home value of million or more.It’s no surprise that San Diego has five such cities. Included in the list is Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Coronado, Solana Beach and Encinitas.One of those cities, Encinitas, became a million city within the last year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A large group of city leaders, hotel workers, homeless service providers and community members gathered Thursday outside the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter to show support for the Yes! For a Better San Diego initative.The initiative, which will appear on the March ballot, has bipartisan support and seeks to address the city's homelessness issues, street repairs and job creation with a hotel tax increase. Supporters say the initiative would generate 7 million in the first five years. According to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the highest hotel tax increase would be in downtown San Diego at 3.2 percent, with 2.25 percent for hotels on the outskirts of downtown and 1.25 percent for hotels on the outskirts of the city.San Diego's current transient occupancy tax is 10.5 percent."It's not only about the thousands of jobs that you just heard, the infrastructure and the roads, the most important issue that is facing our city the issue of homelessness and for the first time a dedicated funding stream," said Faulconer.He said the initiative would also expand the San Diego Convention Center and create 7,000 new jobs.Some tourists tell 10News raising the hotel tax could backfire and make some visitors simply stop coming to San Diego on vacation."It probably means I'll choose somewhere else next time I travel, somewhere more affordable for me," said one tourist who did not want to be identified."I definitely think it's important to deal with the homeless population and expand your economy, but I don't think that should happen with your tourism dollars. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Malayasian national faces voyeurism charges after a video camera was discovered in the bathroom of a San Diego flight last May.Choon Ping Lee was arrested this week and charged with video voyeurism within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, ABC-affiliate KTRK reported.Court documents revealed on May 5, a passenger on United Airlines flight 646 from San Diego to Houston discovered a blue light flashing in a first-class bathroom. The woman took the device to the flight crew, who in turn brought it to officials at George Bush International Airport.Security at the airport confirmed the device was a video recording device, KTRK reported. Officials reviewed the device's footage to discover it recorded a man installing it in the bathroom, documents say. Airport surveillance connected the man's clothing with footage of him boarding the plane on departure and leaving when it arrived in Texas.Investigators said they also found footage on the device from another flight, where at least two women were captured on camera aboard an Emirates flight.Lee also works for Halliburton, which provided FBI investigators with Lee's travel itinerary and footage of him wearing the same jewelry as seen in surveillance video as well, documents revealed.The company issued a statement to KTRK, reading: "Halliburton is aware of the situation and is cooperating with the FBI and U.S. Attorney's office in their investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A reported threat to San Diego State University campus was deemed not credible, according to campus police.University police were told of a person making "incoherent threats" on campus Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local brewery's decision to use compostable can holders is the latest example of San Diego companies deciding to go green.Pure Project Brewery made the change last month, giving its customers an easier way to take home 4-packs of beer while still being environmentally friendly."You have to make that decision; do I wanna do the right thing, or do I wanna do the cheap thing," says Pure Project Co-Founder Mat Robar. He says every decision his company makes takes the environmental impact into account."It costs us a good amount of money to brew beer with organic and local ingredients, and sometimes it takes a little longer. Ultimately it's the right thing to do," says Robar.The new can holders are made of recycled grain, leftover from the brewing process. They biodegrade in 200 days. And, if they wind up in the ocean by accident, they're safe for animals to eat.Pure is one of the hundreds of San Diego companies emphasizing the planet over profits.Right now, the San Diego Green Business Network lists more than 200 local companies as members.Experts say it can help build a brand, attract a loyal customer base, and also help make money in the long run."The efficiencies of going green has significant business implications," says Heather Honea, the Chair of the Marketing Department at SDSU's Fowler College of Business."If you're trying to build a brand that's meaningful for consumers, you have to speak to the things they care about. Your brand has to be associated with the things they care about," says Honea.In California, that includes environmental impact."If I'm deciding between product a and product b, I'm choosing the product that not only delivers a certain set of quality attributes but also is going to have the impact on my local community or local environment that I think is acceptable," she says.Honea also says that investments in green technology and business practices may cost a lot of money upfront, but they tend to pay themselves off in the long run.
