LINCOLN PARK (KGTV) - Women received free mammograms in Lincoln Park on Sunday.Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer. The free screenings were available because of Susan G. Komen San Diego. The non-profit parked a mobile screening center in front of City of Hope International Church on Holly Drive. More than two dozen women received mammograms. "It's very important for women to get mammograms because early detection is the best protection, and when breast cancer is caught in its early stage, it's basically 99% treatable," said Wendy Shurelds with Susan G. Komen San Diego.Sunday's screening is one of many. The next screening will be Friday, October 26th at Northgate Market on University Avenue. 767

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A tree trimming truck crashed into the side of a La Mesa church Wednesday, creating a gaping hole in the side of the building.A tree trimming crew was working on some trees on Pointe Ave., when their truck began rolling down the hill into the San Diego Taiwanese Presbyterian Church at 4426 Harbison Ave. around 1:30 p.m. according to witnesses."We all watched helplessly as there was nothing we could do," Rob Engquist, a witness, said. "Turns out they had gone out to reposition it, moved their wheel chalk out fo the way, don't know if the parking break was set or what happened, but the truck was going down the road on its own."La Mesa officials are investigating how the truck became dislodged.No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.The church's pastor told 10News the building hit by the truck is home to a weekly Bible study held Wednesday nights. 905

La Mesa (KGTV)- It’s being called one of the most progressive marijuana ordinances in the county. The city of La Mesa plans to unveil its proposed rules this week. City leaders believe lifting limits is the key to defeating illegal pot shops. If passed, the City of La Mesa would be the first in the county to put forth an ordinance without a hard cap on the number of dispensaries within city limits. “We didn’t play that game,” says La Mesa City Council Member Bill Baber. “We’re basically saying they’re in our commercial areas, they have to be regulated, and the market itself will flush out how many get to exist.” Councilmember Bill Baber says the proposed ordinance would weed out illegal pot shops by operating a path to run a legitimate business. It’s a different approach than the one in Chula Vista. City leaders hope a limited number of legal dispensaries will drive customers away from illegal pot shops. Currently, there is only one legally operating dispensary within La Mesa city limits. “We’re proposing our dispensaries that have legally been selling medicinal marijuana to also move one step forward and to sell recreational. It’s the same product.”Under the new laws, the dispensaries will be taxed. The money will go to the city’s general fund. It will help with putting more officers on the street and shutting down illegal operations. Councilman Baber says the city estimates the new ordinance will bring in nearly million a year in city taxes. The funds will also be used to clean up old run-down buildings that once housed illegal dispensaries. “In 4 years our city attorney and our police have shut down 26 of these,” says Baber. West La Mesa Resident, Erik Egelko, says the boarded-up businesses are now bringing in squatters. Behind an old, illegal pot shop on El Cajon Boulevard sits old furniture, trash and the rancid smell of urine. “It just really turned into a slum,” says Egelko. “I see west la Mesa as having this incredible potential.” The La Mesa City Council will be reviewing the ordinance during tomorrow’s city council meeting. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A man reportedly armed with a knife was shot by police officers during a confrontation in La Mesa Monday.The shooting happened before 9 a.m. on Fletcher Parkway, at Amaya Drive, La Mesa police told 10News.Police said a 13-year-old girl reported that an unknown man was throwing knives at her and chased her.The girl ran to a sandwich shop to call 911, police told 10News. She was not injured.RELATED: Threats against East County schools investigatedResponding officers located the man on Fletcher Parkway and attempted to take him into custody, but during the confrontation in which police officials said he refused to drop a knife, officers fired at least two shots at the man.The injured man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His condition is unknown.According to the girl's mother, Tammy Brown, her daughter was on her way to Parkway Middle School when she stopped by to walk with a friend who lives near Fletcher Parkway and Amaya. Before she arrived, the victim noticed the man mumbling and yelling to himself before he reportedly threw a closed pocket knife at the victim, striking her.  1175

LITTLETON, Colo. — In one Colorado neighborhood, life is quiet, which makes what happened last Sunday hard to understand for many residents.A man named Scott Smith was arrested after claiming that his wife, Kanokwan Smith, tried to kill him with a butcher knife in their Littleton home. In an affidavit detailing the incident, he said he had no choice but to shoot and kill her. As of Sunday evening, Scott had not been charged in connection to the case and he is not in custody.For neighbor Dominique Naylor, who has known Kanokwan for more than a decade, the pain is unbearable. She said she was a hard worker and juggled three jobs."She’ll never be able to wrap her arms around her little girl again and he shouldn’t have that right," Naylor said. "He shouldn’t be out and he shouldn’t be free."She said there's not a question in her mind that Scott killed her, and other neighbors and friends agree, adding that Scott "wasn't the kind of person you ever wanted to see (Kanokwan) with."She said anybody who knew her friend knows she wouldn't hurt a fly."It just seems so unfair to live in a world that doesn’t have her in it because she’s just so kind and worked so hard and how could anyone hurt her?"
