(KGTV) - Authorities from jurisdictions across California gathered in Sacramento to announce the arrest of a suspect in the decades-long East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer case.Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested Wednesday in connection with a series of killings, rapes and burglaries that occurred around the state in the 1970s and ‘80s.Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, flanked by district attorneys from several other California counties, said of the new development in the case, “The answer has always been in Sacramento. We found the needle in the haystack, and it was right here in Sacramento.”Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones told reporters that DeAngelo was taken into custody at his home in Citrus Heights, a city several miles outside of Sacramento. His arrest was the result of an executed search warrant out of Ventura County.Jones said detectives’ hard work and the use of DNA technology “led us to the right road” in identifying DeAngelo as a suspect and his arrest. 1022

(KGTV) — Disneyland cast members, fans, and local officials rallied outside of Disneyland to call for California to reopen shuttered theme parks throughout the state.Demonstrators, with signs in hand blurring the line between Disney quotes and calls for action, gathered on Saturday to demand Gov. Gavin Newsom announce guidance for Disneyland and other theme parks to reopen amid the pandemic."If Disneyland is open world-wide then why can't Disneyland in Anaheim be open," one employee told KABC. "I think the governor needs to give us a chance to reopen and they keep asking and he keeps pushing the bar farther back."This month, Disney announced it plans to lay off 28,000 employees partially because of California's reluctance to reopen theme parks. The parks have been closed since mid-March when many coronavirus closures began.The guidance was reportedly set to be released soon in September, until Newsom said that the state will take its time before issuing rules."We are going to be led by a health-first framework and we’re going to be stubborn about it," Newsom said earlier this month. "That’s our commitment — that’s our resolve. We feel there’s no hurry putting out guidelines."Newsom added, "it’s very complex. These are like small cities, small communities, small towns. (KGTV) - A NASA astronaut with a special tie to San Diego is preparing for her trip to the International Space Station. Wednesday morning, 10News Anchor Jim Patton spoke to Dr. Jessica Meir, who earned her Doctorate in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She’ll be taking her first space flight as part of the next crew going to the ISS. "There is definitely a Scripps Institution of Oceanography flag as well as some other items from San Diego," said Astronaut Jessica Meir, speaking from Star City, Russia, where she's been training for the past year and half. She'll be applying her scientific skills to a myriad of experiments some 250 miles above the earth. "We will be on board for about six months,” said Meir. “That's the average length of a space station mission these days. And we will be conducting all kinds of scientific investigations, ranging from how our blood vessels and arteries are actually thickening and stiffening in response to the spaceflight environment. And how it affects all of our physiological systems." Meir says the research is part of the quest to send humans to Mars. Much of the work is at the leading edge of science but some is as practical as your kitchen. "Do we have a progress for trash?" Meir can be seen asking a fellow crew member as they train on a mock-up of the space station. "Where do you think we're keeping trash right now?" While very down to earth, Meir says all the training is very necessary. "When we have anything that breaks, like a toilet or need to change a light bulb, we can't call a plumber or electrician. We have to do all that stuff ourselves as well." Of course, all of this amid a little background fact: it requires the guts to blast-off from the comforts of Earth into the ultimate hostile environment of space. "How do you have the courage inside to do something like that,” asked Patton. "I think the biggest answer is the amazing training here on the ground," answered Meir. "The teams in Houston, all over NASA, and here in Russia as well. They prepare us for any situation." Jessica Meir and her crew are scheduled to take off from Russia on Sept. 25. (KGTV) — Firefighters battled a vegetation fire north of Fallbrook Saturday afternoon.Cal Fire firefighters reported the brush fire near the intersection of Deluz Rd. and Santa Margarita Trail in the Deluz area, north of Fallbrook.Dubbed the Santa Fire, the blaze was at 6 acres and 0% contained just before 2 p.m. Fire crews said there was no immediate structure threat in the area. Just before 2:30 p.m., Cal Fire reported that forward rate had been stopped and crews would remain on scene "to mop-up and build containment line."It's not clear how the fire began. 573
