SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego photographer is searching for a mystery couple seen in a Sunset Cliffs engagement photo.Elmer Rodriguez says he was out for a walk with his kids taking pictures of the sunset in late February. When he looked off to the side, he says he spotted the couple in the distance and decided to capture the special moment. “I decided it’s a good memory and they should have it,” Rodriguez said. But when Rodriguez walked over to meet the couple, he says they vanished. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego school was briefly locked down after shots were fired near the school Monday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, officers responded to the 5100 block of Ewing Street near San Diego State University after 1 p.m. to investigate reports of shots fired. Due to the investigation, the nearby Language Academy was briefly placed on lockdown. Witnesses say they heard five or six shots being fired. Police also found a small amount blood in the area, but no victim was located. 517

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After a bitter primary, voters are getting a clearer picture of who will move on in the race to replace Congressman Duncan Hunter in East County's 50th Congressional District. Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa, a former Congressman, are leading the field. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Campa-Najjar had 34 percent of the vote; Issa had 25 percent, former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio had 21 percent, and State Senator Brian Jones had 11 percent. There are still about 350,000 provisional and mail-in ballots to be counted. It is unclear how many of those would include district voters. RELATED: Campa-Najjar, Issa hold leads in 50th Congressional DistrictHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one felony count of campaign fraud. The seat has remained vacant since. On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar and Issa began taking at aim at one another in anticipation of facing off in the November runoff. Campa-Najjar pointed out at that Issa does not live in the 50th Congressional District, and said he was part of an older political establishment. "He's been going around the county trying to find a seat for himself. He fled his own seat and now wants to run in this district. It's not up for grabs, it's not for sale. We're going to vote for someone who is from the district," Campa-Najjar said. Meanwhile, Issa said he is very connected to the 50th District, and has represented swaths of it in the past. "At the end of the day, I can't take him as seriously, as long as he isn't voting for a Republican speaker that's going to, in fact, move a conservative, positive agenda, which I will," Issa said. Campa-Najjar is pitching a moderate agenda that he says can bring together those who are both pro-choice and pro-life, and those who are pro-and anti-gun rights. San Diego. The primary ends a bitter campaign period in which Issa and DeMaio took out blistering ads against each other over who was more loyal to President Trump. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An infectious disease expert at San Diego State University says early research suggests the COVID-19 pandemic could cause a spike in another, more deadly respiratory disease: tuberculosis.An estimated one in four people on the planet is already infected with TB without knowing it. The bacterium that causes the disease can lie dormant for years, even decades, waiting for the right moment to strike.San Diego State University professor Dr. Faramarz Valafar says SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, could be just the right pathogen to trigger more TB cases to activate, both worldwide and in the U.S. And the symptoms of COVID-19 could help spread the TB bacteria more efficiently.“COVID-19 could act as a vehicle for transmission of tuberculosis,” he said. “This is a significant public health risk.”In the early 1900s, TB was the number one cause of death in the U.S. Today, it remains one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide with about 1.5 million deaths each year, although deaths in the U.S. are now rare. There were 515 deaths in the U.S. in 2017, the most recent data available.Although the tuberculosis is mostly curable and preventable with antibiotics, some strains have become drug-resistant.“I believe it's naive to think that because there is not much tuberculosis here in the United States, it’s going to remain that way,” said Valafar. “We now have a vehicle for the transmission of all sorts of tuberculosis strains from around the world to the United States.”The CDC estimates up to 13 million people in the U.S. have latent TB. Studies have shown the disease can activate when the immune system is weakened, including by HIV.“If COVID-19 comes in and keeps the immune system busy or overburdened, then my first worry is that tuberculosis in those people could activate,” he said.A small study out of China that has not yet been peer-reviewed suggests people with latent TB are at a higher risk of developing severe COVID symptoms. Other experts have raised concerns about the pandemic could exacerbate TB infections.Valafar said his second worry is that the symptoms of COVID-19 could help spread tuberculosis. Both pathogens take hold in the lungs and cause coughing.“If the person has tuberculosis, all it takes is for COVID-19 to make that person cough or sneeze and there will be a much higher risk of tuberculosis transmission,” he said.Valafar and his team are already studying the effects of TB and HIV in South Africa. They plan to soon expand their study to examine the effects of COVID-19 as well, with results expected in about a year.In the meantime, he’s sounding the alarm to urge people to heed public health warnings. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 125 years serving San Diego customers Jessop's Jewelry store is closing down. Owner Jim Jessop tells 10News it was a decision several years in the making and one that is definitely bittersweet. All three of his sons opted not to take over and he didn't want to sell a business with such strong family ties. Jessop's dates back to the late 1800's when Jim's great grandfather opened the first store. He also designed the iconic clock which is now on display at Horton Plaza.Jessop says he doesn't have a firm closing date, he will simply stay open until he's sold the last piece of jewelry. Property owners at Horton have asked Jessop to move the clock, so he is now in the process of looking for another location that will preserve the timepiece. 799
