VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash in Encinitas that left a mother with severe injuries was sentenced Monday to one year in jail.Justin Parker hit Ashley Lane on Encinitas Blvd. in September 2017. She suffered multiple broken bones, strokes, and partial paralysis.Parker turned himself in two weeks after the hit and run, as investigators were closing in on tips from the community. Investigators say Parker had been drinking prior to the incident.Investigators said Parker drove his truck to a repair shop in Riverside county to repair the damage. Lane made a victim impact statement in Vista court Monday, calling Parker 'selfish' and 'cowardly'."The only reason you turned yourself in was because of the tips from the community of Encinitas and the hard work from my father. VISTA, Calif. – A Carlsbad pastor whose wife caught him molesting a female family member was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday afternoon. Matthew Tague stood in Superior Court in Vista to read a statement of apology; taking 100 per cent responsibility for hurting those closest to him and saying he's getting counseling for his sex addiction."For all these things, I am and will be truly and profoundly repentant and in light of my terrible and reprehensible actions. I would like to share why I'm grateful that I was discovered on May 5, 2017."His wife stood then, talking about rehabilitation and forgiveness. "This sentence my husband faces, we all know is indeed lifelong; no matter what number of years is decided, these events will follow him for the rest of his life."Deputy district attorney Patricia Lavermicocca hammered on Tague's role in the community, as pastor of North Coast Calvary Chapel. "This isn't just a father; he is a pastor who teaches the community the morally right thing to do."Judge Daniel Goldstein noted Tague's selfishness and aggression, calling his acts outrageous and heinous. "I do consider that you never had a criminal history but you stepped off the deep end."Tague, 44, pleaded guilty in February to two counts of lewd act on a child.According to Deputy District Attorney Patricia Lavermicicca, Tague repeatedly molested the victim between 2016 and 2017 when she was 12 and 13 years old.RELATED: Carlsbad pastor arrested on child molestation chargesTague’s wife reported him to the authorities after catching him in the act in May of 2017. 1597

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Cynthia Santiago is currently a master police officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, but she will soon be Sgt. Cynthia Santiago and the first Latina filling the role.“I'm excited and nervous, and excited-and-nervous is like a constant continuation,” Santiago said. She has been on the force for 10 years and said she joined the police department because she wanted to give back and help her community. She said she also feels some weight on her shoulders."I'm the first one stepping into this role, but I think that as a sergeant,” Santiago explained, “I think my career as a police officer and as a detective shows the type of person I am."She has experience in the patrol unit, domestic violence unit and as a detective."You know, just a regular person - I'm a mom, I'm a daughter and a police officer,” she said. “I don't want to just be considered just the 'Latina police officer.' I have plenty of extracurricular activities that I do outside of work with my family."Santiago took on special projects and efforts such as building a relationship between the department and the growing local Latino community. One way was by helping to start the Hispanic Citizen’s Police Academy last autumn. She will work out of the fourth precinct and said she hopes to continue working on these initiatives as a sergeant."It was so successful, that Hispanic Citizen's Police Academy, and hopefully we have another one because we had a lot of interest of people who still wanted to join,” Santiago said. “Once this pandemic leaves, maybe have some type of community event and invite the community leaders of the Hispanic population here in Virginia Beach."She officially starts her role on Thursday. She said she hopes to, “be the best sergeant I can be in this new role I'm about to partake but hopefully help other females in the police department move up in the ranks as well."This story was originally published by Julio Avila at WTKR. 1969
WASHINGTON (AP) — A report from the Labor Department's inspector general says nearly 3,000 federal workers have filed compensation claims for contracting COVID-19 on the job. And that number is expected to double by early next month. Through mid-June, families of 48 federal workers also had filed death claims. The report only reflects the number of federal workers or their families who filed claims by June 16 — not the number who have contracted the coronavirus or died from it. Reports from individual agencies indicate the number of infections and deaths is much higher. The IG report is one of the first centralized assessments of the way the virus is affecting the federal workforce. 699
WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr, one of President Donald Trump's staunchest allies, is resigning amid lingering tension with the president over the president's baseless claims of election fraud and the investigation into President-elect Joe Biden's son. Barr went to the White House on Monday, where Trump said he submitted his letter of resignation. "Just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House," President Trump tweeted on Monday. "Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job! As per the letter, Bill will be leaving just before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family." 670
