SAN DIEGO (AP) — A statue of former California Gov. Pete Wilson has been removed from a San Diego park after critics said the governor supported laws and policies that hurt immigrants and LGBTQ community members. The 13-year-old statue near Horton Plaza Park was removed by Horton Walk, the nonprofit that owns it. Earlier this week, Latino and gay rights groups held a news conference in front of the life-sized bronze sculpture calling for its removal. Sean Walsh, Wilson’s law partner and former chief of staff, said the statue was a recognition of the governor’s 50 years of public service. 602
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Two federal judges have ordered the United States Postal Service to continue to implement "extraordinary measures" to make sure ballots are delivered on-time before the presidential election.A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Postal Service to take "extraordinary measures" to deliver ballots in time to be counted in Wisconsin and around Detroit, including using a priority mail service.Chief U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian in Yakima, Washington, issued the order on Friday after being presented with data showing on-time delivery of ballots sent by voters were too slow in the battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin.Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office says delivery of ballots in the USPS Detroit district, for example, has dipped as low as 57% over the past week. National on-time delivery has been at 93% or higher. This comes on the same day that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan signed an order, which requires the USPS to use the Express Mail network to make sure ballots are "entered close to or on Election Day to their intended destination," CNN reported. In a statement on Friday, the USPS outlined its "extraordinary measures" local post offices would take to accelerate ballots' delivery.CNN reported that processing plant managers send ballots and all local ballots to the provincial election or post office by 10 a.m. Monday and Tuesday by using Express Mail.Reuters reported that local ballots must be processed and delivered to regional post offices the day they arrive or the next morning until Nov. 7. 1581
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Trump administration fully restored the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for immigrants brought to the U.S. as young people, complying with a federal judge's order. The announcement is a major victory for people who have been unable to apply since Trump ended DACA in September 2017. His administration has long argued that DACA is unconstitutional. There is a key hearing Dec. 22 in Texas in a lawsuit by several states challenging DACA's legality.President-elect Joe Biden has pledged to reinstate DACA when he takes office in January but permanent legal status and a path to citizenship would require congressional approval. 686
SALEM, Ore. – Oregon voted to legalize psilocybin mushrooms for therapeutic use on Tuesday.A psilocybin is a hallucinogenic chemical obtained from certain types of fresh and dried mushrooms, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).With 81% of votes reported Wednesday morning, 55.8% of the electorate had voted to approve Oregon Measure 109, The Associated Press reports. While some states have decriminalized the so-called “magic mushrooms” or "shrooms," this measure makes Oregon the first state to legalize them.Under the measure, licensed service providers are permitted to administer psilocybin-producing mushroom and fungi products to those 21 years or older. The DEA says it’s often ingested orally, brewed as a tea or added to foods. The measure authorizes the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to create a program to help these licensed providers to administer the products. The measure was backed by war veterans with PTSD, those with terminal illnesses and others who suffer from anxiety or depression, who claim psilocybin helps. Some opponents say science does not yet indicate that psilocybin is a safe medical treatment. 1150
