ADELAIDE, Australia, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China Giant Pandas Wang Wang and Funi arrived at Australia's Adelaide airport on a chartered jumbo jet from China on Saturday. The pandas were welcomed at their new digs in the Adelaide Zoo after arriving in a climate-controlled semi-trailer escorted by police.     They will spend the next 30 days in quarantine in their specially built enclosure at the Zoo before going to the public on Dec. 13.     The CEO of Adelaide Zoo Dr. Chris West and the Cultural Councilor of Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Australia Ke Yasha with a crowd of about 100 local people greeted them at the Airport.     Ke said, "Nearly 400 Chinese people welcomed the arrival of the Giant Pandas in Chinatown despite the poor weather." BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade in 2009 dropped 13.9 percent from a year earlier to 2.21 trillion U.S. dollars and its trade surplus last year slid 34.2 percent year on year to 196.1 billion U.S. dollars, according to figures released Sunday by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).     In breakdown, China's exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from in 2008, and imports reached 1.01 trillion U.S. dollars, down 11.2 percent from a year earlier, said the GAC.     In December 2009, monthly trade amounted to 243 billion U.S. dollars, which represented a year-on-year increase of 32.7 percent and a month-to-month rise of 16.7 percent.     Last month, China's exports were worth 130.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 17.7 percent from a year earlier. December's imports hit record monthly high to reach 112.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 55.9 percent from the same period of 2008, according to the GAC.

FUKUOKA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday his visit to Japan had "a positive result" and "achieved what he had expected."     Xi made the remarks before leaving the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, the last stop of his Japan visit, for South Korea to continue his four-country Asia tour.     During a meeting with Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso, Xi said he held fruitful talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo and exchanged views with representatives of all Japanese circles. TORONTO, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The emerging markets of China, India and Brazil will lead the way in global auto sales in 2010, a report said Tuesday.     The U.S. market, meanwhile, was expected to see a double-digit increase and will lead the growth of mature markets in 2010, said the global auto report by Canadian Scotiabank Economics.     The report said that a cyclical recovery in global auto sales began in the spring of 2009 and would gain momentum in 2010.     China became the world's largest auto market in 2009, surpassing purchases in the United States. Car sales in China surged by more than 40 percent to 7.3 million units this year thanks to government incentives.     The incentives included a reduction in sales tax from 10 percent to 5 percent for small fuel-efficient vehicles with engines less than 1.6 litres.     The incentives were expected to lift sales by 20 percent to nearly 9 million units in 2010, the report said.     "Global car sales will continue to be buoyed by the ongoing massive and synchronized monetary and fiscal stimulus, which has generated a global economic recovery, including improving auto lending across the globe," said Carlos Gomes, senior economist at Scotia Economics.     "In fact, we estimate that auto loans across major markets bottomed in the first quarter of 2009 and have improved consistently alongside a thawing in global credit markets and falling interest rates," he said.     According to the report, improving access to credit and a return to 3-percent growth in the world economy will enable 2010 car sales to recapture half of the ground lost over the past two years, and set the stage for record volumes in 2011.     Auto sales in the United States have reversed the downward trend, with volumes advancing above a year earlier since August alongside a nascent economic recovery.     The report also predicted that through a vehicle scrappage program to spur the market, auto sales in Canada would reach 1.53 million units in 2010, up from 1.45 million this year.     "On average, 7 percent of the Canadian fleet is replaced each year," Gomes said. "However, the scrappage rate slumped to less than 6 percent in 2009, as the global economic downturn prompted Canadians to tighten their wallets and continue to drive their aging vehicles.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Diplomats from the European Union (EU) member states on Tuesday spoke highly of China's recent promise on its greenhouse gas emissions reduction.     "We welcome that national objective of China," EU ambassador to China Serge Abou said at a press conference in response to related questions.     China, as the biggest developing nation, set a good example for the international efforts in emissions reduction, he noted.     China announced on Nov. 26 that it would reduce the intensity of its carbon dioxide emissions per GDP unit in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent from the 2005 level.     Swedish Ambassador to China Mikael Lindstrom, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, told Xinhua that he and his country "have a lot of respect for the series of efforts" that china has made.     "The climate change is really a serious global crisis, we cannot fall into a zero-sum game," he said, noting that "we hope it will be win-win, but if we don't do anything it will be lose-lose".     As the hosting nation of the Copenhagen climate change conference, Denmark's diplomat Soren Jacobsen welcomed Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's attendance to the upcoming meeting.     China's announcement of its emissions cut promise "is positive", said Soren Jacobsen, Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Counsellor of the Danish embassy to China.     Jacobsen hoped that an agreement would be reached at Copenhagen.     The diplomats from EU's all member states gathered here at the press conference to mark that the Treaty of Lisbon came into effect on Dec. 1.     As stipulated in the Treaty, the Delegation of the European Commission to China was renamed the Delegation of the European Union to China on Tuesday.
