LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A FedEx plane had to make an emergency landing at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).The airport says FedEx Flight 1026, a Boeing 7677-300, landed safely after declaring an emergency Wednesday morning.The Los Angeles Fire Department transported one of the pilots to the hospital with a non-life threatening leg injury that was sustained during the evacuation of the plane.LAX says the aircraft wasn’t carrying any passengers.KNBC and KTTV report that the plane was arriving in California from Newark, New Jersey, and landed at about 5 p.m.According to KTTV, the pilots of the plane reported a problem with the landing gear before the aircraft landed and slid on its underside. 715

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California Edison said Tuesday its equipment likely sparked one of two ignition points for the massive wildfire that tore through California's central coast last year.Witnesses reported flames near the company's power poles in Ventura County last December and the utility "believes that its equipment was associated with this ignition," Edison said.Dozens of lawsuits allege Edison equipment caused the deadly Thomas Fire, but the statement marked the first time the company made such an acknowledgment.Edison hasn't determined if its equipment started the second ignition point nearly 6 miles (10 kilometers) away.Fire officials declined to comment on Edison's statement because no official cause of the fire has been determined. A multi-agency investigation is continuing.Investigators were looking at "every possibility" ranging from weather to human or even animal factors, and the nearly year-long probe probably won't be completed for another 30 days, Ventura County fire Capt. Stan Ziegler said.The Thomas Fire was the second-largest in California history, scorching 440 square miles (1,140 sq. kilometers) and destroying more than 1,000 buildings in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Six Catholic dioceses across California, including Los Angeles and Orange, announced the creation today of a ``compensationalternative to pursuing lawsuits against the church.Diocese officials said the fund will be open to all clergy sex abuse victims, including people living in the country illegally and those who are barred from filing lawsuits because the abuse occurred long ago and is beyond the statute of limitations.``We have been providing pastoral care and financial support for victim-survivors here in the Archdiocese for many years,'' Los Angeles Diocese Archbishop Jose Gomez wrote in a letter to members of the diocese. ``We will continue to do so. But we also understand that some victim-survivors are reluctant to come to the church for assistance. Our hope with this new program is to give these people a chance to seek redress and healing through an independent program.''In addition to Los Angeles and Orange, other dioceses taking part in the program are San Bernardino, San Diego, Fresno and Sacramento -- collectively covering more than 10 million Catholics, or roughly 80 percent of the state's Catholics. Church officials noted that the compensation program will provide a ``non-adversarial'' process that protects victims' privacy -- unlike lawsuits.``Victim-survivors do not need to have a lawyer to participate and there are no fees for participating,'' according to a statement from church officials. ``Settlements for fully completed claims can be paid within 90 days.''Diocese officials also noted that the church itself will have no control over the program, which will be independently administered by mediators Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros, who already run similar programs in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Colorado. Lori Becerra has a lot of work to do, picking up the pieces of Category 4 Hurricane Michael.Becerra helps run Southern Assisted Care, a place seniors with Alzheimer’s call home.“With their cognition, they don’t always recognize what’s going on,” explains Becerra. “So, we tried to kind of keep it from them.Since Alzheimer’s patients don’t always process information the same way, Becerra says she didn’t want to create unnecessary stress.But how do you keep a Category 4 storm howling on the other side of a boarded-up window a secret?Becerra says they kept their residents entertained.  “In the middle of everything, being scary and you know you’re hearing trees come down and hearing wind howl, you’re turning on music on the radio and doing a dance party,” she says. “You’re putting out puzzles to do a puzzle.”Becerra says it was just about keeping her residents distracted.“And they haven’t been back outside since the storm so they don’t even realize what’s happened,” she says.The facility is now without running water, and Becerra expects to be running on generators for days, if not longer. She says she’ll take the burden of the stress, so the residents, as she puts it, can stay blissfully unaware.“It’s protected them from having to go through what we’re feeling emotionally when we see it,” Becerra says. 1331
