MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — The Martin County Sheriff's Office said a 28-year-old man faces poaching charges after deputies said he was caught with two gopher tortoises at a state park.Deputies responded Sunday evening to Seabranch Preserve State Park and found the suspect, identified as Robert Lane, on the ground.The sheriff's office said Lane pulled two endangered tortoises from their hole and was on the ground searching for others.Lane was in possession of a male and a female gopher tortoise when deputies caught him.They said he admitted to deputies that he pulled both of the tortoises from their hole and was going to take them home where he had planned to eat them.Gopher tortoises are a threatened species and federally protected.The case was turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lane faces charges related to poaching on state property.Deputies said they found the hole where Lane pulled the tortoises from and returned both reptiles to the location.  1043

MILLIKEN, Colo. — Beatriz Rangel holds onto precious moments with her father. She took hundreds of pictures over the years, and now, she is more grateful than ever to have them.Her family made time to visit each other every single week, but they also loved vacationing together. “We’d just hit the road and go everywhere,” said Rangel of her parents and siblings.Looking back on their moments of joy is now helping Rangel find a shred of peace.“He loved posing for pictures and I loved taking them,” she said of her dad, Saul Sanchez. “We had so many good times.”She never expected those memories to end so soon. “I still have a hard time believing that my father is gone.”At 78 years old, Sanchez died on April 7 after a weeks-long battle with COVID-19. The loss is still fresh in Rangel’s mind.“I got a text, a group text message, from my older sister that said, ‘Dad and mom were just here. Dad can't even walk. There's something definitely wrong,’” said Rangel.Soon after, Sanchez went to the hospital and he tested positive for the virus. That was the last time his family would see him in person.Rangel made sure to speak to her dad as much as she could while he was in the hospital. “I called him and he sounded great,” she said. “He’s like, ‘Hi honey, hola mija. You know I'm doing OK. I’ll be fine, I’ll be back to work on Monday,’” Rangel remembered.However, Sanchez never left his hospital bed. Within days, doctors put the father of six on a ventilator.“We just thought, ‘Oh they're going to help him breathe,’” said Rangel.Sanchez’s condition took a turn for the worse suddenly and Rangel got a call she will never forget.“They're like, ‘We want you to say goodbye, and they're taking him off the ventilator.’ I just told him that…that I loved him, and I was going to miss him, and thank you for all the lessons, but I knew he wanted us to be happy. You know, he wanted us to find joy in whatever we did, 'cause he loved life. They took him off the ventilator, and within like two, three minutes he passed away, so it was very, very hard,” said Rangel through tears.Months later, with the pain of the loss still just as deep as it was in the spring, the true cost of this virus is becoming all too clear to Rangel and her family.“He helped so many people, and he was, for our family, the glue. So I think we all really, really miss that. We miss that one person that always made us feel like anything was possible.”Saul Sanchez’s life proved just that. He brought his family from Mexico to America, leaving his life behind for a better future for his children.“He came here with nothing because of my sister Patty being sick and needing health care, and his biggest thing was education. He went and got his GED at 60, 60 years old. He didn't care about his age, he cared about what he could learn and how he could be a help to society and contribute to the community,” said Rangel.Losing the person who cared about her family most is making a time of year meant for joy harder than she imagined, and now Rangel just hopes her community will see the hole in her heart as a warning to keep others safe.“I feel like he was my backbone, and I don’t have it anymore,” said Rangel. “You go through, ‘Who am I?’ You’re lost, because I don’t have him to tell me, ‘Honey you’re going to be fine, you’re going to be great.’”For the more than 250,000 Americans who have passed away from COVID-19 this year, their families know the same pain. Counselors say making time for the traditions your loved one enjoyed can help honor their memory. That’s something Rangel plans to do.“It’s very hard to have the spirit to want to celebrate,” she said. “It is going through the motions, but we still have to do it because that's what Dad would want.”Even though this Christmas cannot bring her the gift she really wants, Rangel knows the warmth and kindness her dad showed her will be there.“There is a lot of goodness that went away with him, but I was thankful, grateful to have him fifty two years of my life,” she said. 4024

MESA, Ariz. -- An Arizona "Dreamer," business owner and soon-to-be father was detained by ICE agents after serving time for a DUI charge in Mesa. His pregnant wife is due any day now and is hoping an online petition will help convince a judge to let her husband out on bond so he can see the birth of their daughter.Justine Dachel and Misael Trujillo met at Jewel's Bakery and Cafe in Phoenix, which they now own and run together. They got married in December."Our restaurant would fail if he wasn't able to be here," said Dachel.Trujillo is a "Dreamer." His parents brought him to the United States when he was a child, and until recently, he was a DACA recipient protected from deportation. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program allows undocumented immigrants brought as children to live and work in the U.S.In 2018, Mesa police reports show Trujillo was charged with "DUI- impaired in the slightest degree" for marijuana. Trujillo tried to fight the charge for more than a year and finally took a plea deal, thinking he'd be able to choose a jail in California and avoid deportation. However, because of COVID-19 restrictions, Trujillo had to serve in Mesa, and ICE agents were notified. He was taken into custody on June 29.According to an ICE spokesperson, Trujillo remains in ICE custody while he awaits a hearing with an immigration judge with the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review.The spokesperson also gave KNXV this statement for background on the process:"ICE lodges detainers on individuals who have been arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable aliens. The detainer asks the other law enforcement agency to notify ICE in advance of release and to maintain custody of the alien for a brief period of time so that ICE can take custody of that person in a safe and secure setting upon release from that agency’s custody."Dachel said Trujillo was sober when he was driving, but blood tests showed he had traces of marijuana in his system. Still, she said that shouldn't be enough to remove someone from the only home they've ever known."Yes, pay the fines, do the community service, do the work they need to do, but if they are not a harm to society, and they make a mistake--we all make mistakes," said Dachel. "It's just not fair."Dachel is an American citizen. She is 39 weeks pregnant with their baby girl they've named Beni."Because of corona, he's actually the only one allowed in the room with me. So if he doesn't come home, then I'll be by myself," she said.Ezequiel Hernandez is an immigration attorney in Phoenix. He's not representing Trujillo. He said Trujillo will have to go through the deportation proceedings, and the first step will be to get him out on bond. He said a judge will take several factors into consideration."The fact that he's been here for 20 years, the fact that he's married to a U.S. citizen, the fact that he's about to have a baby, the fact that it has been his only crime, the fact that he has a business, he was in the DACA program. He has a lot of equities, but that one single issue puts him as a priority because of this administration's priorities, he is a criminal alien and has to go through this process," explained Hernandez.Hernandez said the current administration is a lot tougher when it comes to bonds and people who've been convicted."They have hardened since the Obama administration to now....where most of the judges will not issue a bond with a DUI, in my opinion," said Hernandez.Because of COVID-19, Hernandez said many hearings have been suspended, so it's unclear when Trujillo will have his bond hearing.Dachel said she just wants him at her daughter's birth. She started a petition on change.org in support of her husband. As of Friday evening, it had nearly 15,000 signatures."Kind of just tell the judge how many people, how much he's needed in this community, and how many know and love him and how wrong this is that this is happening to us," said Dachel.Dachel said her doctors will wait as late as next Friday to induce her, but she could have her baby any day due to complications she's been having."I know how much he wants to be there, but he just said that I need to do whatever is good for her," said Dachel about her daughter's birth.Hernandez said bond or no bond, it will be a costly and timely fight to get Trujillo legal status, and it's very likely he'll have to leave to Mexico during the proceedings."This is another reminder of why the immigration system has to be reformed, and particularly the DACA population-- obviously they're very fragile in terms of what they could go through, and this is one of those situations," said Hernandez.This story was originally published by Claudia Rupcich at KNXV. 4788

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Kentucky judge ruled Tuesday that a grand juror in the Breonna Taylor case is allowed to speak publicly. The grand juror alleges the jury was not given a chance to weigh charges directly connected to Taylor's death against the Louisville police officers who shot her.Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Annie O'Connell released a statement in her ruling, saying the order is not intended to coerce, compel or even encourage any grand juror to come forward.
