URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. He visited rural households, schools, farms, a crude oil pipeline station at China-Kazakstan border, industrial zones, and army camps.

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) - Deeper reforms, especially systematical ones, will be carried out and extended to more key areas in China during the next five years to provide further momentum for the country's future development after it comes out of the economic crisis, economists and observers have said. The ongoing Fifth Plenary Session of the 17th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee is discussing the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), or the nation's development plan for the next five years, and "reform" is set to be one key topic at the meeting. At a meeting of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau two weeks ago, it was agreed that the coming years will be a crucial stage to deepen the reform and opening-up process while accelerating the transformation of the nation's economic development pattern. The reform and opening up in China, which started more than 30 years ago, had helped the country to achieve rapid economic development in the past decade, and it is widely expected to enter a new stage and touch upon issues that are hard to penetrate, especially systematical ones, in the next five years.Peng Sen, deputy director with the National Development and Reform Commission, the nation's top economic planner, said the systematic and mechanism restraints are the main crux that had frustrated the progress of China's economic development pattern transformation."Without major breakthrough in the system it would be difficult to achieve a fundamental change in the way of economic development," he told Xinhua.Chi Fulin, head of the Hainan-based China Institute for Reform and Development, told Xinhua that the 12th Five-Year Plan is likely to focus on systematic reforms in economic, political and social fields. While further improving the market economy system, China should speed up forming a public service system and a public service-oriented government, which would lay the foundation for boosting domestic demand and sustainable development, Chi said.Wang Tao, an economist with UBS Securities, praised the Chinese government for efficient moves in the face of the global crisis, since a powerful government is able to position all of its economic resources.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with U.S. President Barack Obama here on Thursday, focusing on bilateral ties and regional and world issues and calling for more cooperation.China and the United States can deepen their cooperation on significant international affairs and major regional issues as well as on efforts to handle global financial woes and climate change, Wen said.He said China and the United States could forge an even closer and wider-ranging trade and financial relationship. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) meets with U.S. President Barack Obama in New York, the United States, Sept. 23, 2010.At the beginning of the meeting, Wen said the China-U.S. relationship has advanced beyond the bilateral scope and has a major impact on the world. The common interests of the two countries far outweigh their differences, Wen said.Although there exist differences between China and the United States, the problems can be well solved through dialogue and cooperation, the premier said. The meeting at the United Nations added to the increasing number of meetings held between Chinese and American leaders since Obama took office in 2009.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday vowed to enhance coordination with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to continuously push forward the reform of the global economic and financial systems. "Currently the world economy is recovering slowly, but the outlook still remains uncertain," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said while meeting with visiting IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn in Beijing. To completely get over the global financial crisis and realize sustainable development requires the international community to follow a path for mutual benefits and common development, face up to what caused the financial crisis and step up reform of the global economic and financial systems, he added.Praising China's counter measures against the crisis as "correct", Strauss-Kahn said the IMF values China's position and role and would like to build closer ties with the country. He called on countries to help one another to consolidate the growth momentum of the world economy. In an earlier meeting with Strauss-Kahn, Vice Premier Wang Qishan urged timely adjustments to global economic rules and standards to keep pace with the development of the global economy."The developing countries and emerging economies should have more say in the process," he added. He said the international community should work closely to ensure a success of the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit. In response, Strauss-Kahn said the IMF would continue to strengthen cooperation with China and increase the country's representation and voice in the organization.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- China expressed its deep concern over Japanese right-wing demonstration at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo on Saturday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu.Ma made the remarks when asked to comment on the demonstration by hundreds of Japanese right-wing organization members at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo Saturday afternoon."China urges Japan to earnestly fulfill the related obligations laid out in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and take effective measures to ensure the security of China's embassy, consulates, institutions and personnel in Japan," Ma said in a press statement.China-Japan relations have been strained since a collision occurred between two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler on Sept. 7 in the East China Sea off the Diaoyu Islands, over which China claims sovereignty. In Tokyo, the right-wing groups had planned to mobilize 3,000 people to gather in front of the Chinese Ambassy to "clarify Japanese's attitude on the issue," according to a report on ifeng.com.
