AKRON, Ohio — More than 200 Ellet High School students received their diplomas Friday night at Akron Civic Theatre in Ohio. Among them was an 87-year-old man getting an honorary diploma, 70 years after he left school for the military.Floyd Edward Hoskins, known to friends and family members as Ed, left Ellet High School in 1949 at age 17 to join the military.“Three years, three months, 19 days,” Hoskins said of his total time in the Army. During that time, he said, he was supposed to serve in Korea but was sent to Alaska for two years instead.When he came home, Hoskins said he initially had trouble finding a job but eventually landed one at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he worked for “44 years, four months, three weeks and one day.”Hoskins moved to Hawaii two years ago to live with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. His daughter-in-law, Cynthia Allen Hoskins, began doing some research into veterans’ benefits.“We are retired military, my husband and I,” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “And we were doing some research as far as our kids and their benefits in order to continue their college education.”She ran across information about the benefits the State of Ohio provides to veterans, where she learned her father-in-law might be eligible to receive his high school diploma. She inquired with his former school and found out he was eligible.“His reaction was kind of, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I really want to do this. It’s just a piece of paper,’ ” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “But after we explained to him, ‘Dad, you know, you really pushed education on us, we push it onto the grandkids. So why not?’ You know, if this is something that you deserve, go for it.”She said her father-in-law eventually came around to the idea.On Friday, when asked if he ever thought this day would come, Ed Hoskins said, “No, never.”“It’s an honor, but it’s scary,” he said, tearing up. “I’m not used to being in the limelight.”Decades older than his fellow graduates, Ed Hoskins received his diploma first, to loud applause. 2039

Airlines are prohibited from banning specific breeds of dogs on board flights as service or emotional support animals, the US Transportation Department said Thursday, amid controversy over safety and passengers abusing the policies for emotional support animals.The guidelines outlined by department officials appear to invalidate a recently-announced Delta Air Lines policy barring "pit bull type dogs" from traveling as service or emotional support animals.Airlines are allowed a case-by-case determination of whether an animal is safe to travel, and airlines can also require people traveling with emotional support animals to check in at the airport lobby, rather than online, to allow an airline official to review the animal."The airline does have the authority to do an individualized assessment of any dog, every breed of dog, and if any dog -- no matter the breed -- is determined to pose, or deemed to pose a risk to the health or safety of other passengers, the airline is free to deny boarding," a department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told reporters on a conference call explaining the change.The Transportation Department is developing new long-term rules for passengers with service animals.The department will not seek to invalidate any airline policies prohibiting animals other than dogs, cats and miniature horses -- the most common species of service animals -- from traveling as emotional support animals, the officials said.Airlines will have one month to change any policies that do not comply with the interpretation. A teacher’s aide at a Parma, Ohio, school is taking time during the holidays to give free haircuts to students during study hall.Nerjes Taweel, 21, is a licensed cosmetologist and instructional aide at Summit Academy, now combining her two passions to help out students as they head off on break. “I enjoy it because you get to see their reaction after you do the transformation,” Taweel said. “It just makes you feel good when they feel good.”Taweel works out of a school conference room converted into a pop-up salon, complete with clippers, capes, scissors and hairstyling essentials. Since November, she has given haircuts to more than 40 students and has dozens more “appointments” to go before winter break.“The last couple days I’ll start a little bit earlier so I can make sure everyone goes to Christmas break happy with how their hairstyle is,” Taweel said.The haircuts are completely free for students, which some say is a huge help for them and their families.In addition to the teaching and haircuts, Taweel is currently pursuing a degree in social work at Cleveland State University. 1110
