The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking people who take a COVID-19 vaccine to download a smartphone app so it can continue to track side effects.The app, called V-Safe, uses text messages and web surveys from the CDC to check in with patients who have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine.The app will also remind patients when it's time to go back for a second shot.Patients can expect to experience mild symptoms like fever, headache and muscle aches after taking the vaccine. But doctors, like Dr. Grace Lee — the associate chief medical officer for practice innovation at Stanford Children's Health and a member of the CDC's vaccine advisory panel — say those side effects don't tend to last very long."We hope that patients will be willing to engage in the system, recognizing it does take some time," Lee said. "But it's really important for all of us in the U.S. to make sure that we are helping to create a robust vaccine safety monitoring system for all COVID vaccines."Lee says that because clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines have been so large — with 30,000 to 60,000 people in each trial, compared to just several thousand for a typical trial — there's already a lot known about the vaccines.The trials have shown no major safety risks thus far, but Lee says rare adverse events can happen — like the two healthcare workers in Alaska earlier this week who suffered anaphylactic allergic reactions with the Pfizer vaccine. The side effects reported by those two patients were similar to the ones suffered by two people in the U.K. earlier this month.Lee says that's why the CDC is counting on as many people as possible to use V-Safe."My hope is that if the numbers are high," Lee said. "It just means it gives us more information more quickly, and so for anything rare that might occur, we would be able to pick it up much more quickly."V-Safe send text messages to patients, asking them how they are feeling for up to six weeks after their shots. The FDA is offering formal guidance on the amount of inorganic arsenic allowed in infant rice cereal.Exposure to inorganic arsenic has been associated with neurodevelopmental effects, according to the Food and Drug Administration, including lung and bladder cancer risk. Arsenic occurs naturally in the soil, and rice has been shown to absorb a small amount during the growing process.The new guidance identifies a level of at or below 100 micrograms per kilogram and is based on draft guidance from 2016. The guidance is recommended, but not legally enforceable.“It is important to note that the agency’s data show that most products on the market are already below this level and that parents and caregivers should know that a well-balanced diet also includes a variety of grains like oats and barley,” said a statement from Susan Mayne, Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.According to the FDA, results from testing in 2018 showed 76 percent of samples were at or below the 100 ppb level, compared to 47 percent of samples tested in 2014 and 36 percent of samples tested between 2011-2013.The FDA attributes the drop in inorganic arsenic presence to changes manufacturers are making in sourcing rice and testing their ingredients. 1279

Last year, consumers spent .4 billion.Adobe projected consumers to spend .7 billion this year on Cyber Monday in its early holiday spending forecast.On Cyber Monday, Adobe said the number of orders picked up curbside was up 30% from a year ago, as consumers shopped safely during the pandemic.Many people also used their smartphones to avoid crowds at brick and mortar during the pandemic. The Girl Scouts of the USA have appointed their first-ever Black CEO.On Monday, Judith Batty took over as Interim CEO after Sylvia Acevedo, who was with the Girl Scouts for four years, stepped down on Aug. 10. Acevedo's last day with the organization was Saturday."When I was young, the Girl Scouts instilled in me the courage, confidence, and character that have guided me through my life and career. It is an incredible honor to bring those lessons back full circle to help the Girl Scouts navigate this transition," said Judith Batty, interim CEO of GSUSA in the press release. "As families across the country contend with so much uncertainty and upheaval, I am committed to ensuring that the Girl Scouts continues to offer shelter in the storm - a place where all our girls feel welcome can find community, solidarity, leadership opportunities and fun, despite the challenging moment we are all collectively living through."Batty began in the organization as a Brownie with the Nassau County Council in New York. The Camp Fire is just the latest fire tragedy in California. Residents are still rebuilding in Wine Country more than a year after the destructive wildfires there.In the one year since Kelly Bracewell's Santa Rosa home turned to ash, she's figured out how to be happier. She’s also learned how to live without some of her most cherished possessions.As she rebuilds her own home, she works to help others who lost everything."As an interior designer, it’s been a great distraction,” she says.She says she wants to help put the community back together.Another community member, artist Gregory Roberts, is also using his talents to help people heal.One artist is using the ashes to help the people who lost their homes heal.“I was standing in the studio during the fires, and ash was falling all around,” Roberts describes.Roberts was certain that he, too, would lose his home. Fortunately, his house and pottery studio survived, but the ash raining down over Wine Country gave him an idea.“I wanted to be able to give people back something to let them know that your memories are not actually lost; your memories are all still intact,” he says.Roberts started collecting ash from lost homes. Ashes from 140 homes appeared in a plastic bin on his front porch, some with handwritten notes, of people wanting him to create art from their lost homes."Something from their home, because this idea that everything is lost is a hard one to overcome," Roberts says.Roberts says the ash remnants of homes are different, so the patterns and colors are never the same."I really want each one to be sort of its own unique animal,” Roberts says. “In the same way that each person's home is unique." 1691
