DENVER – Funeral services for a pregnant Colorado woman and her two daughters, who were killed earlier this month and dumped at an oil and gas site will be held Saturday in Pinehurst, North Carolina.The family of 34-year-old Shanann Watts, her daughters, 4-year-old Bella Marie and 3-year-old Celeste Cathryn, and Shanann’s unborn child, which the family said was going to be called Nico, announced in the Sandhill Sentinel that funeral services would be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Pinehurst.“She was out pride and joy, a true gift from God,” Shanann’s father and mother, Frank Rzucek and Sandra Onorati Rzucek, wrote in her obituary. “We were so blessed to have such a joyful and wonderful daughter whose beauty was that of a doll.”The obituary says Shanann battled Lupus during life and that Celeste’s birth was exciting because of her struggle with the disease. DEL MAR (CNS) - Mean Sophia, a 3-year-old filly, has died after suffering an injury while racing at Del Mar Racetrack -- the first equine fatality during a summer meet at the track since 2018.The horse stumbled coming out of the gate in Saturday's seventh race, broke her leg and was euthanized after track veterinarians determined that she could not be saved, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.Mean Sophia was owned by Sinnott Family Trust and trained by Peter Miller, according to the industry website Equibase. Her jockey was Ricardo. Gonzalez. She had eight career starts and one first-place finish.While there have been no racing deaths at Del Mar this year or last, four training deaths were recorded last summer, and four other horses have died at the track this summer -- two in training accidents and two listed for ``other'' causes.Officials with Del Mar and the California Horse Racing Board did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Some animal rights activists have urged the track to suspend racing this weekend due to the extreme heat wave plaguing Southern California.Sunday's high was expected to reach 95 degrees in Del Mar. According to lifeguards, the five-foot-long shark was spotted at 1 p.m. off 15th street as crews patrolled the area in a boat. Lifeguards say the advisory signs will be taken down in 24 hours unless any more sharks are spotted in the area. The sighting marks the fourth day in a row a shark has been spotted in the area. Research biologists say if a shark is under six feet, they are juveniles and eat smaller fish, posing no threat to people. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Heidi Dewar, Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center said. Democrats are pressing Equifax to offer more protection to millions of Americans after last year's massive data breach.In a letter Tuesday, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee asked Equifax's interim CEO to offer customers at least three years of credit monitoring and identify theft protection.
