Gavin Newsom and the California Public Health Officer to seek a court order that sets aside the state orders preventing public schools from holding in-person classes and resuming services on campus.The vote came during a closed session Tuesday night, according to a statement.The California Supreme Court has interpreted the California Constitution to require that California school children have a constitutional right to substantially equal opportunities for learning, and the governor's order will unequally burden the most underprivileged families of California, the bard's lawyers said in a statement.The attorneys, Tyler & Bursch, LLP, of Murrieta in Riverside County, said they agreed to represent the board pro bono "to protect the vulnerable children in California."The lawsuit will also be supported by the nonprofit legal organization, Advocates for Faith & Freedom."California children have a constitutional right to both an education and equal protection under the law. The governor denied them these rights and did so without adequately considering the disparate impact these restrictions would have on the disadvantaged," said attorney Jennifer Bursch of Tyler & Bursch, LLP. "We brought this lawsuit to protect the single mom and her children, children whose parents do not read or write English, and children with special needs."The governor's ban on in-person learning will cause tens of thousands of kids to fall through the cracks and, in many cases, will be harmed for life."The Orange County Board of Education earlier this month approved a non-binding recommendation for reopening schools that would not require physical distancing or wearing masks. SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A 68-year-old man was struck by an SUV and killed crossing a street outside of a crosswalk in San Ysidro, police said this morning.The accident occurred near a Shell gas station in the 300 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard near Border Village Road about 9:25 p.m. Friday, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 45-year-old woman driving a 2016 Dodge Journey made a left turn out of the gas station parking lot onto East San Ysidro Boulevard at the same time the man attempted to cross from the south side of the street to the north side, Heims said.The man was struck by the vehicle and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.Alcohol was not considered a factor in the crash and the person at fault was yet to be determined, Heims said.Anyone with information on this deadly crash was asked to call Traffic Division investigators at 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 960

SAN MARCOS (CNS) - Palomar College will break ground today on a new on-site food pantry that will help meet the massive demand of students facing food insecurity.The future Anita and Stan Maag Food and Nutrition Center will offer a modern, bigger home for the college's food pantry, which has been in operation for over three decades. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV)— The border shutdown at the San Ysidro Port of Entry Sunday created a ripple effect for transportation and nearby businesses.Many people were stranded at the port crossing for five hours before Homeland Security reopened the lanes in the evening. Christmas shopping at the Las Americas Outlet Mall came to an abrupt stop for Maria Martinez. "The mall was closed. She was shopping when she was told to leave the mall suddenly. Minutes prior, she claimed she saw a swath of caravan migrants rush the back of the mall, which the CBP denies."I saw the Salvadorenos people trying to cross the border,” Martinez said. “It was like watching a movie. I couldn’t believe it. I saw everything.”Customs and Border Protection closed off the San Ysidro Port of Entry late Sunday morning. Then the California Highway Patrol blocked off both the 805 and 5 Freeways south of the 905 interchanges. American federal agents in full tactical gear lined up along the border, at times using tear gas and rubber bullets to deter migrants.  "Over there, there was smoke and the noise of the gun,” Martinez said. At this point, there are no reports of any of the migrants successfully crossing the border. Martinez said she saw federal agents turn them around. The bus depot next to the mall was also closed, leaving shoppers like Martinez stuck and not knowing when they could get home. "I don't know. I think it's going to close the border. When everything is in peace, they are going to open. What time? SAN MARCOS (KGTV) -- Since CSU San Marcos student Adrianne McWilliams was young, the service was always near and dear to her heart."My dad was active duty for 20 years, so the first few years of my life I moved around a lot. When I was in elementary school, my mom started working for the Marine Corps," McWilliams said.When she found out that those coming home from deployment wouldn't get the staple celebration she remembered as a child, McWilliams wanted to take matters into her own hands."It just kind of made me think about how when I was really young and my dad was deployed, whenever he came back there was always that big homecoming moment," McWilliams told 10News.She created thank you and care packages for those returning home from duty."I'm doing everything I can to make sure that there's at least a little handwritten note on it that says 'welcome home' and 'thank you for your service' so at least they get that little bit of homecoming that they'd get if this were under usual circumstances," McWilliams added.She included basic essentials like toiletries and snacks, something she said they could use since many of them have to self quarantine for two weeks before reuniting with family."Our Marines that are coming home do deserve a special homecoming. Coming home after a long deployment then having to quarantine is not an ideal situation," said McWilliams.McWilliams gathered gifts and donations thanks to friends, family and community members, all from word of mouth and social media. Her first batch was given to 35 returning members."I've always liked giving back but when it's something I'm passionate about and have a personal connection to, the motivation is a little stronger and it's something that hits closer to home," she said.On June 2, 50 packages will be given to another group of returning members.
