Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer was suspended for three games without pay in the wake of an investigation into exactly what he knew about spousal abuse allegations leveled against former assistant coach Zach Smith, the university announced Wednesday night.Athletic Director Gene Smith was suspended without pay from August 31 to September 16, according to a summary of the investigative findings and university actions."Although neither Urban Meyer, nor Gene Smith condoned or covered up the alleged domestic abuse by Zach Smith, they failed to take sufficient management action relation to Zach Smith's misconduct and retained an assistant coach who was not performing as an appropriate role model for OSU student-athletes," the summary said.The announcement followed a 10-hour meeting held by the Ohio State University Board of Trustees discussing the job status of the famed football coach and three-time national championship winner.Ohio State put Meyer on paid leave August 1, saying it wanted to investigate exactly what he knew about the allegations leveled against former assistant coach Zach Smith.Ohio State fired Smith on July 23, three days after he was served with a civil protection order on behalf of his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. She has accused her former husband of abuse, including domestic violence in 2009 and 2015.The day after Smith's firing, Meyer told reporters that he knew about the 2009 allegation, but didn't know about the 2015 allegation.Then Courtney Smith told Stadium, a sports network, that she told Shelley Meyer about the alleged 2015 incident that year -- leading to speculation about whether the coach did know.Ohio State, already embroiled in separate scandals involving alleged sex abuse by a now-deceased athletics doctor and a diving coach, put Meyer on leave and formed a group led by a former Securities and Exchange Commission chairwoman to conduct an investigation.Meyer later said that he had been inadequately prepared to discuss the issue in late July, and that he had "followed reporting protocols and procedures ... regarding the Zach Smith incident in 2015."Zach Smith told ESPN on August 3 that he indeed discussed the 2015 incident with Meyer as police investigated the matter. (AP) — A worker doing an inspection on a popular central Florida thrill ride was killed Monday after falling more than 50 feet.Orange County Fire Rescue tweeted that firefighters responded to the Orlando StarFlyer ride early Monday after receiving a report that the 21-year-old man had fallen. The unidentified worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.The ride wasn’t moving at the time.At 450 feet, the Orlando StarFlyer is billed as the world’s tallest swing ride. Visitors in swings rotate around a pole reaching speeds up to 45 mph. The ride is located on International Drive, the busy tourist corridor in Orlando. 659

ORIENTAL, N.C. – A Navy veteran says his Chihuahua mix saved his life.Rudy Armstrong was on his houseboat in Oriental, North Carolina, when he suffered a stroke, according to CarolinaEast Health System.Luckily, Armstrong’s dog, Bubu, was there and sprang into action.“He and Bubu have a special bond and when Rudy couldn’t get to his phone to call for help, he looked his little friend in the eyes and said ‘I need help. Go get Kim,’” wrote the hospital in a Facebook post.Immediately, the hospital says Bubu ran off to get Kim, the area dockmaster, who called 911. They ultimately saved Armstrong’s life, with the help of paramedics and the staff at the hospital.On Aug. 7, the hospital says it was able to orchestrate a reunion between the veteran and “his best girl.” It was an emotional moment for everyone there. Armstrong, who has reportedly sailed all over the world and “has stories for days,” said he was very appreciative of the care he received at the hospital. 980

Officers in Columbus, Ohio are crediting a good Samaritan for tripping a suspect who was reaching into his waistband while being chased by officers. The police department released video from the April 3 incident on Thursday. Cameras captured the man, who Columbus Police are calling "Bill," casually sticking out his leg outside of a public library as the suspect ran behind him. The suspect then went flying into the sidewalk, giving officers an opportunity to arrest the unidentified suspect. Police said that they recovered a Glock 9 MM pistol with a high capacity extended clip containing 29 rounds near the suspect. Columbus Police added that citizen likely saved the suspect's life as officers might have shot the suspect for pulling out the gun. In the video released by Columbus Police, Bill said that he could see the suspect was holding something from his waistband."I heard him hit and the gun went sliding out," Bill said. "He went one way and the gun went another.""Thank you 'Bill' for sticking your leg out for us," Columbus Police said on the department's Facebook page.Columbus Police did not say what the 18-year-old suspect was wanted for.  1217
