When you hear “self-care,” you might think of mani-pedis, relaxing facials, or soothing massages. But with millions of people struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic, practicing “financial self-care” is important, too.Rachelle Beazley of Detroit was working in sales for a food broker when COVID-19 first hit back in March.“I was lucky I didn’t lose my job – my full-time job – but I did lose my three side hustles,” said Beazley.She was a dog-sitter, an overnight nanny, and taught workshops on making hand-knitted blankets.“I think immediately with the pandemic, it was a strain. Like, oh my gosh. I’m not going to have all these financial streams coming in – this extra revenue,” Beazley recalled.She’d just started working with Ann Arbor financial therapist Lindsay Bryan-Podvin – who advises people dealing with financial anxiety to practice five steps of “financial self-care.”Start Emergency FundBryan-Podvin said the first step is starting an emergency fund – even if you’re only adding a few dollars at a time.“I know a lot of viewers are going to be like, ‘Lindsay, I don’t even have time to think about an emergency fund. I’m just trying to make ends meet.’ Any time you can scrap away ten-dollars here, 30-dollars there, it again just gives you a little bit of peace of mind that if something were to happen, you’re not totally at zero in that bank account,” she said.Bryan-Podvin advised Beazley to add up her essential expenses and multiply by three – making that amount her new emergency savings goal. Anything over that would go towards paying off debt.Insurance, Will & TrustHer number two recommendation is to set up life insurance – if you don’t have any already – along with a will and trust.This is particularly important if you are married and have kids in the home under 18.“I would say get your life insurance first, and then get your will and trust in place,” Bryan-Podvin said.“That 20, 30, 40-dollars a month can provide out a benefit of anywhere from a quarter-million-dollars to a million dollars. So that again is that peace of mind.”Explore a Side HustleThe third step is to explore a side hustle or new ways to make some extra money.“A lot of us might be taking jobs that we might be over-qualified for, or we might be picking up some odd jobs here and there just to make ends meet,” said Bryan-Podvin.She said you need to remember that the situation you’re in now will get better. “Going back to that mantra of this is temporary,” she explained.If you’re looking for ideas, think of the sectors of the economy that are doing well right now.Food delivery services, tutoring, even COVID-19 compliance consultants – a good opportunity for furloughed health care workers Bryan-Podvin explained.Give To OthersIf you are one of the fortunate ones still working during this health crisis, Bryan-Podvin said you may be experiencing Financial Survivor’s Guilt.So, her number four step with financial self-care is to give to others -- volunteer, donate, help someone in need. When will companies learn the golden rule: Think before you tweet.Keurig and other brands caught flack from all sides for how they responded to social media calls to distance themselves from Fox News host Sean Hannity. Companies walked back statements they made on Twitter or struggled to explain their actual relationships to Hannity -- in each case stoking the social media fires.Critics targeted companies that advertised on Hannity's syndicated radio show as well as his Fox News program after Hannity appeared to defend Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore on Thursday. Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct with teenagers, including a 14-year-old girl. He has denied the allegations.The firestorm began in earnest on Friday. Angelo Carusone, president of liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America, appealed directly to brands like Keurig to cut advertising ties with Hannity."Good afternoon @Keurig. You are currently sponsoring Sean Hannity's show ... please reconsider," Carusone wrote on Twitter.Keurig responded the next morning. The company said on Twitter: "We worked with our media partner and FOX news to stop our ad from airing during the Sean Hannity Show."Keurig's response was praised by Hannity's critics. But it sparked a backlash from Hannity's supporters, who started a #BoycottKeurig hashtag and, in some cases, even smashed their own Keurig machines.By Monday, Keurig CEO Bob Gamgort had apologized for how Keurig responded."The decision to publicly communicate our programming decision via our Twitter account was highly unusual," Gamgort wrote an internal memo to employees. On one hand, firms should be engaging with their customers online. On the other, they should be wary of jumping into a controversy too quickly, he advised.Sometimes when companies tweet "they are acting from the seat of the pants, as opposed to taking a moment to analyze and examine the dimensions of the event or issue," Schenkler explained.By responding too quickly on social media, companies may end up exacerbating controversies that may fizzle out on their own, he said.Brayden King, a professor of Management and Organizations at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, said Twitter can be an easy way for brands to get messages to a large audience. "Twitter reaches a lot of people very quickly," he said, while "a press release can be ignored by the very people you want to see it."But companies do face a risk when they use social media platforms to disseminate a position. "If you don't think through the media strategy carefully, you can expose yourself to criticism from other people -- including people you see as potential customers," King said.Schenkler added that brands may sometimes forget how public their Twitter interactions are."What [brands] might consider to be business conversations are just out there, and people forget that," he said. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Roses are red and Ken Lerman’s suit is too.If you see his bouquets, he has a message for you.The 55-year-old loves to love and he now uses roses to let people know it.There’s some pain behind Lerman’s purpose.His, “Roses for Change,” campaign began this summer after he and people across the country witnessed the fallout following the death of George Floyd while in police custody.“How can one human being do that to another human being, I was crying when I saw it,” says Lerman.Armed with roses and a message of love Lerman says he wanted to reach those most affected.“I gotta give this to all the African Americans, they’re hurting,” he tells WPTV.His message has since caught on both online and in Palm Beach County where he regularly shares love and roses to people of all colors. We caught up with Lerman with a hundred of his favorite flowers in hand at the Milagro Center in Delray BeachHigh Schooler, Dachinise Philbert, says, “I was surprised and I was like oh I love you too.”A lot of these teens say it’s been a while since they’ve heard those words directed at them and even longer since they’ve been given flowers.Philbert says, “It was kind of weird at first I was like roses? With emotions still raw days after a deadly school shooting in Florida, one Ohio family is fighting back against what they think is an unfair punishment.Beth Mertel says one of her son's peers brought a toy gun to Greenbriar Middle School in Parma on Feb. 8, and pointed it at her son, Joey."He says he doesn't want to be the snitch," Mertel said. "They're 11 years old. They're kids. They're trying to find their place with their friends too."Mertel says the Parma City School District suspended the student who brought the toy gun, along with three other students, including Joey, for knowing about it but not telling an adult about it.The district stands behind the discipline, saying the three additional students were punished under a part of the Student Handbook labeled "Withholding Information."Mertel's concern is with the severity of the punishment, not the rule she admits her son should have followed."No matter how much I disagree with the suspension, you still should have said something," said Beth.Mertel says Wednesday's tragedy in Florida is an important teaching moment."I said [to Joey] you need to go home and turn on the news," said Beth. "You need to watch this, you need to understand this."The district tells us that suspension will stay on Joey's internal school record through middle school and into high school. Beth says it's a hefty punishment that falls short of teaching the lesson she says is worth learning."Whenever you see something, you have to tell somebody," said Mertel.
