Of those interviewed, 71 percent reported contact with pig ear dog treats or with dogs who were fed pig ear dog treats. The report did not contain a recall, but some pig ear treats have been pulled from shelves. The CDC said that the Michigan Department of Agriculture tested pig ears for salmonella. Although the outbreak strain of salmonella was not found in the pig ears, of strains were. The CDC said that investigators are checking to see if the pig ears tested were responsible for the illnesses. In the meantime, the CDC offers the following advice:Tips to stay healthy while feeding your dogAlways wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water right after handling pet food or treats, including pig ears. When possible, store pet food and treats away from where human food is stored or prepared and away from the reach of young children.Don’t use your pet’s feeding bowl to scoop food. Use a clean, dedicated scoop, spoon, or cup.Always follow any storage instructions on pet food bags or containers.Play safelyDon’t let your pet lick your mouth or face after it eats pet food or treats.Don’t let your pet lick any open wounds or areas with broken skin.If you do play with your pet after it has just eaten, wash your hands and any part of your body it licked with soap and water.Shop safelyAlways wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching unpackaged pet treats, such as food or treats in bulk bins.Take extra care around young childrenChildren younger than 5 years old should not touch or eat pet food or treats.Young children are at risk for illness because their immune systems are still developing and because they are more likely than others to put their fingers or other items into their mouths.Adults should supervise handwashing for young childrenHow do I know if my dog has Salmonella infection? Some dogs may have Salmonella infection but may not look sick. HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University's Mo'ne Davis took the country by storm in 2014, becoming the first girl to pitch a shutout in Little League World Series history. That performance led to another historic moment when Davis became the first Litte Leaguer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Due to the stardom Davis experienced after making headlines as a 13-year-old, there was a lot of excitement when she decided to play softball at Hampton. “I was like oh snap," Hampton outfielder/first baseman Brianna Anderson said. "I was like oh this is big.” “When everyone found out she was coming it was kind of a cool deal, you know,” Hampton head softball coach Angela Nicholson said.Although, the position that earned her fame more than five years ago is now in the past for Davis. In fact, she won't even pitch to her teammates during practice, even though they ask to hit off her "like every day," Nicholson said.As a 13-year-old baseball player, Davis was pitching as fast as 70 miles per hour, but now she utilizes that arm strength at middle infield.“I wanted to keep hitting so I was like I'm just gonna play an field position," Davis said. “Her transition and her glove work is phenomenal, and that’s where you see the baseball side of things,” Nicholson said. The transition, early on, was accompanied with some uncertainty by the Pirates. The team was unsure what to expect from someone who experienced stardom at such a young age.“I thought the kid was gonna be arrogant or cocky, but it was complete opposite," Nicholson said. "If you didn’t know who she was it would never come out. She doesn’t speak of it. She just wants to be a normal everyday person.” “From the moment she stepped on campus she’s worked harder than everybody," Hampton pitcher Emily Workman said. "She just always gives it 110 percent.” Davis made her Pirates debut on Sunday, going 1-for-3 with a two-run single in Hampton's season opener against North Carolina A&T. The Pirates take the field again on Friday in Greenville, North Carolina, where they'll face George Washington University. This article was written by Megan Plain for 2145

Five months ago, Brendan Bialy was sitting in his 12th-grade English class at a Colorado high school when a fellow student walked in late, holding a gun.Bialy, along with two other classmates, charged and disarmed the alleged shooter. Now, the heroic student is a United States Marine. The Castle Rock, Colorado, native graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Training in San Diego on Sept. 20.Bialy was an aspiring Marine even before the May 7 shooting that happened at STEM School Highlands Ranch, and the tragedy only made him pursue his goal harder."Honestly, my thoughts on becoming a Marine were nothing but reinforced after the shooting," Bialy said in a video shared by the Marine Corps. "What I saw that day was complete and total malevolence, bad, overcome by good. And I lost an amazing person. The world lost an amazing person — Kendrick Castillo."Students Joshua Jones and Castillo also helped disarm the suspected school shooter. Castillo, an 18-year-old senior who was just days away from graduating, was killed. After Castillo was shot, Bialy said he kept the gun away from the suspect and helped a teacher perform chest compressions on Castillo. But Castillo didn't respond.Jones was shot twice but lived. Bialy said that he "saw that benevolence won, legitimately and completely won in that situation." He added that joining the Marines helped him build on a moral foundation he knew he had because of how he reacted in the shooting. The moral foundation Bialy spoke of was the same character he showed during his training, his instructor said."I noticed through some events of training that his past kind of reflected on some things we had to do here: quick reaction, willingness to fight, his character really showed," said Staff Sgt. Chestnut, Bialy's training instructor.According to the Marine Corps, Bialy graduated as a platoon honor man and earned a meritorious promotion to private first class. 1928
