She was one of multiple people who came to the downtown building thinking the skyscraper was open for city business. City workers finally moved in about a month ago, but vacated last weekend after the county served the city with a violation for the asbestos."I think it's taken a horrible toll," said Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who took office after the deal was signed. "I was downtown over the weekend and noticed workers literally wheeling boxes and files and chairs out of 101 Ash."The city insists the building is safe, conducting 235 air quality tests in the last few months, and that it closed the building in an abundance of caution. Bry is now calling for an audit into how the city could do a deal like this. She said she cannot understand why the city would take possession of a property that old "as is.""That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. The program is accepting applications ahead of interviews in December, and January starts.  1227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University officials announced Monday plans for healing circles after reports of several people calling out racial slurs toward the Black Resource Center on campus. A racially diverse group of men was in a vehicle Friday when they yelled slurs at the building on Lindo Paseo, a witness told 10News. “SDSU does not tolerate instances of hatred, racism or discrimination,” said university President Adela de la Torre, interim Vice President for Student Affairs Christy Samarkos, and Chief Diversity Officer J. Luke Wood in a statement. “At SDSU, diversity and inclusion are core values we uphold, and the university is deeply committed to supporting a campus climate and environment that is welcoming and safe, no matter a person’s background or experience. We do not accept hate-driven acts.” Campus officials organized three healing circles to be held on campus this week. Counseling and psychological services team members are also available.
