BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government said Thursday it plans to increase the land supply available for residential property, in a bid to guide the country's runaway property market into more healthy development.China will supply 180,000 hectares of land nationwide to build houses this year, excluding the Tibet Autonomous Region, compared with an area of 76,461 hectares in 2009, the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said.Areas for low-cost housing, renovated shanty houses and small- and medium-sized apartments will be allocated more than 70 percent of the total land supply, the ministry said.In breakdown, areas for small- and medium-sized apartments alone would reach 80,431 hectares this year, exceeding China's total land supply in 2009.Some 35,786 hectares would be allocated for renovated shanty houses, accounting for 19 percent of this year's total land supply.Areas for low-cost housing, consisting of affordable housing and low-rent housing, would be given 24,454 hectares, more than double the 2009 figure. The central government vowed to build three million low-cost apartments for low-income families and renovate 2.8 million shanty houses at the Third Session of the 11th National People's Congress in March this year."We merely need 12,000 hectares to meet the goal set by the central government to build the three million low-cost apartments, well below this year's planned land supply for this part," said Liao Yonglin, director of the department of land use management of the MLR.

NINGBO, Zhejiang, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Internet of Things (IOT) -- which refers to digital networks of physical objects -- has huge potentials but many challenges lie ahead, said scientists, entrepreneurs and government officials on Sunday.IOT has become a catchword for those at the Information and Communication Technology and Urban Development Forum held in east China's coastal Ningbo this weekend on the sidelines of the Shanghai Expo; from ministers to mayors, scientists to entrepreneurs, keynote speakers to audiences.China should accelerate the development of the IOT industry so as to create a new platform for economic growth, said Li Yizhong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology in his opening speech to the forum. The first theme forum of the Shanghai World Expo is closed in Ningbo, a coastal city of east China's Zhejiang Province, May 16, 2010. The two-day forum focusing on information and communication technologies (ICT) and urban development attracted over 600 participants including renowned scholars and entrepreneurs.Minister Li's words were echoed by Zhao Hongzhu, communist party chief of Zhejiang Province, who called for more efforts to develop such key concepts as IOT, which, in his words, "present a brilliant future for urban life."In what's called Internet of Things, networks of real-world objects are linked to the Internet and interact through web services. As more objects are embedded with sensors, giving them the ability to communicate, and networked together, the possibilities are enormous, potentially resulting in new business models, improved business processes and reduced costs and risks, according to a March 2010 report by McKinsey & Co..

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top food safety authority issued new regulations Thursday, setting more stringent requirements on the use and the approval of food additives. The Ministry of Health's "Regulations of New Food Additives," published on its website, set six new restrictions on the use of food additives. The new regulations forbid the use of food additives to mislead consumers about the content and quality of food or to fake food content.Using food additives to disguise decaying and bad quality food is also forbidden.Under the new regulations, food producers are required to use the minimum amount of necessary food additives, and are not allowed to use those that would reduce the nutritional value of food. The ministry would approve new food additives, only if they are proved to be necessary in food production and safe for humans in tests organized by the ministry, the new regulations stipulate. The ministry must conduct reassessments of the safety of its approved food additives, when their necessity and safety are questioned by new research results. The new regulations takes effective Thursday.Food quality in China has been a major concern after a series of scandals. In 2004, at least 13 babies died from malnutrition in the east China's Anhui Province and another 171 were hospitalized, after consuming infant milk powder that contained too little protein. In November 2006, the country's food safety authorities found seven companies producing salted red-yolk eggs with cancer-causing red Sudan dyes to make their eggs look redder and fresher. And in 2008, six babies died and 300,000 others fell ill after being fed with baby formula made from milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine.

BEIJING, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 Shanghai World Expo opened on Friday night, attracting the attention of the world and international participation and earning heartfelt congratulations. Some 20 world leaders attended the opening ceremony and toured the Expo, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak.Chinese President Hu Jintao met Prime Minister of the Netherlands Jan Peter Balkenende in Shanghai Saturday.Balkenende spoke highly of the opening ceremony and fireworks and said he was impressed deeply by the China National Pavilion and Sichuan Pavilion he visited Saturday morning.Spectacular fireworks explode over China Pavilion at the World Expo Park during the opening ceremony for the 2010 World Expo held in Shanghai, east China, April 30, 2010.While meeting European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Shanghai Saturday, President Hu thanked the EU for its participation in the Shanghai World Expo, the organization's first presence at a World Expo held outside the EU countries.Barroso said the ceremony was a great event that showcased a modern China and a China that was much respected. He also said the Expo would be conducive to a stronger common understanding between China and the EU.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a statement Friday, saying he expected the Canada Pavilion would show Canada as a modern, democratic and pluralistic country."The Expo itself will provide us with an opportunity to build stronger economic, diplomatic and cultural ties with China as we showcase our country, our arts and culture, and our values," he said.Expecting millions of visitors from around the world over the next six months, he said: "Let us seize this opportunity to promote our country and build closer ties with our trading partners."Rafal Baniak, undersecretary of state in Poland's ministry of economy, said Saturday at a ceremony at the Shanghai Expo to open his country's pavilion that the Polish people wanted to give the world a better understanding of Poland's economic development through the Expo.He added that Poland wished to foster closer economic ties with China.Chairman and CEO of the U.S. Greater China Corporation, John W. Allen, told Xinhua in an email interview after the opening ceremony that "like the Beijing Olympics, the Shanghai Expo is bigger and better than any previous such event and will definitely set the standard for the future."Allen echoed Chinese President Hu Jintao's remarks that the Expo was a "showcase of the best achievements of human civilization.""It serves as a beacon for peace rather than a capacity for war," he said, "The Shanghai Expo will probably become an even hotter topic among Americans as China has once and again stunned the world by showcasing its might and skills of handling such big events."In an interview with Xinhua, Milan's Mayor Letizia Moratti, whose city will host the next World Expo said: "Shanghai Expo will be a monumental exposition, with many magnificent buildings created by architects from all over the world.""We have many things to learn from China's ability to quickly innovate, open to the world and adopt the best technologies," she said while extending her warm congratulations on the opening.
