BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders took part in a voluntary tree planting activity at the Olympic Forest Park here on Saturday.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, as well as Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang also planted trees at the park next to the national stadium, the main venue of the Beijing Olympic Games.     Covering some 680 hectares in the north of Beijing, the park is a major part of the 2008 Olympics infrastructure, which is expected to improve the city's environment and air quality.     Hu said during the activity that the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are approaching. He urged Beijingers to support the Green Olympics initiative and make the city greener and more beautiful before athletes from worldwide come in August. However, many have acknowledged that the city has done much to improve its air quality.     This is the fifth time since 2001 for top leaders to take part in planting at the park, where nearly 500,000 trees have been planted.     Hu said voluntary tree planting is an effective way to get everyone involved in improving the environment. "For every tree we plant today, we gain another spot of green in the future," he said.     About 2 million Beijingers took part in planting activities in the capital on Saturday, which is Beijing's 24th voluntary tree planting day.

Mainland people will welcome athletes from Taiwan to participate in the Beijing Olympic Games in a most cordial manner, he said.     Jia recalled Lien's first journey to the mainland three years ago and the historic meeting between CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao and Lien, then chairman of the KMT, which has turned over a new leaf for the CPC-KMT relationship.     The recent meeting between Hu and Vicent Hsiew in Bo'ao, Hainan Province, has received good response among people of different circles in Taiwan, which showed that Taiwan people have a common aspiration for strengthening the cross-strait exchange and cooperation, the CPPCC chairman said.     Lien also recalled his mainland trip three years ago which has been supported by the majority of the compatriots of the two banks, and the previous three economic and trade forums held by the two parties. BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators in the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue reached a "principled consensus" here on Friday on verifying the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a Chinese official said Friday.     The top negotiators discussed the specific principles of setting up a verification and inspection mechanism, as well as economic and energy aid to the DPRK, the Chinese delegation's spokesman Qin Gang told reporters. Qin Gang said that the top negotiators reached a "principled consensus" on Friday on verifying the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), which is setting up a verification and inspection mechanism, as well as economic and energy aid to the DPRK. The six parties achieved some progress on the verification mechanism, reaching a principled consensus," Qin said, without elaborating. "The specific consensus will be announced very soon."     Despite different interests, concerns and stances, the parties were striving for issuing a joint document at the end of this round of discussion, Qin said.     He said the top negotiators' meeting, which started Thursday afternoon, went smoothly with "sound atmosphere" and "high efficiency." The heads of delegations meeting would continue Saturday morning, Qin said. "Each delegation is working toward that goal, not only to end tomorrow but to end with results."     On Friday's meeting, negotiators also exchanged views on establishing the peace and security mechanism in northeast Asia.     Besides, the working groups of denuclearization and economic and energy aid held a meeting respectively, mapping out the measures to implement the consensus reached by heads of delegations, Qin said.     The current meeting, held after a nine-month stalemate, came after the DPRK handed over the long-awaited nuclear declaration list late June and then blew up a cooling tower in its main nuclear reactor at Yongbyon.     The six-party talks, launched in 2003, included China, the United States, DPRK, Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan.

  

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Higos, the 17th this year, will drop heavy rain on parts of south China's Guangdong and Hainan provinces over the next two days, the National Meteorological Observatory said on Thursday.     The office advised everyone in those regions to prepare for therain, as well as lightning storms and gale-force winds.     Tourists in coastal cities of the island province of Hainan, such as Sanya and Bo'ao, have been advised to avoid offshore activities over the next three days.     Higos was centered about 700 km southeast of Zhuhai, Guangdong,as of 5 p.m. on Thursday, and it was moving north-west at 20 km per hour. Tourists stay at the beach in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, on Oct. 2, 2008. Tropical storm Higos, the 17th this year, is moving towards south China's island province of Hainan, the provincial meteorological station said on Thursday, affecting the ongoing National Day holidays.    The storm is gaining momentum as it nears eastern Hainan and the mid-west regions of Guangdong, according to the national observatory.     Higos, which formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, comes on the heels of storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which together killed some 20 people in China
