DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County couple is making a plea for help, fearful a power shutoff will be hazardous to their health.Holly and Alan Shields got the call from SDG&E Wednesday night, warning about possible power shutoff. Hours later, the power was shut off at their home in Descanso."My stomach just dropped. You know, it was like, 'What am I going to do?'" said Holly Shields."Nervous and stressed out," added Alan Shields.Both Holly and Alan require breathing aids. Alan, who served in the Army as a welder, suffers from chronic lung issues and must use a CPAP machine to help him breathe while he sleeps.Holly is battling breast cancer."I take very high steroids, which has cut down on the amount of oxygen my lungs can accept, so I have to be on an oxygen machine when I can't breathe," said Holly.Because of the power shutoff, neither Holly nor Alan will be able to their machines."I’m scared to death," said Holly.The two do have a generator, which is outside and has enough juice to power a freezer and heat their seven tortoises."The tortoises have to stay warm. Otherwise, they will go into hibernation, and it will kill them," said Holly.The couple says they couldn't afford an electrician to hook up their generator inside, and can't afford another generator."He lost a lot of work, both of us did, to COVID," said Holly.The couple now finding themselves in a precarious position, worried about how long their power will be out, and unable to breathe easily. They're hoping someone will lend them a generator and help them hook it up."It's tricky hooking it up to a home with solar panels. We have solar panels, but only generate power and send it to SDG&E. Demonstrators have staged themselves at the entrance of CoreCivic’s headquarters in Nashville to “defend families and demand an end to private prisons.” Helicopter footage showed several tents set up around the building, including some banners that read “how many kids have to be jailed before you care?”Demonstrators also replaced the Tennessee flag with the words "No Borders."“CoreCivic is a human rights disaster in our own backyard,” Jeannie Alexander, of No Exceptions Prison Collective, said in a statement. The Nashville-based private prison contracts with ICE. CoreCivic released a statement, saying the facility doesn't "provide housing for any children who aren’t under the supervision of a parent. DENVER, Colorado — While authorities said the suspicious package found outside the Colorado State Capitol Wednesday morning was not an issue, they are still investigating where it came from, what it is and why it was placed on the Capitol steps. Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities responded to the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol after a suspicious package was located. The steps were taped off for about half an hour while authorities, including a bomb squad, examined the scene. All nearby streets remained open.By 9 a.m., Colorado State Patrol confirmed the situation had been resolved and was a "non-issue."Trooper Gary Cutler with CSP said an American flag had been wrapped around the package and there were visible wires sticking out of it. Authorities are still investigating the package to determine where it came from and why it was placed on the steps.Cutler said they are not looking for any suspects in particular as of 10:40 a.m. 974

DENVER, Colo. – A group of entrepreneurs is launching a new app that directs users to Black-owned businesses.“The app is across all 50 states. We just got a notification today about a Black-owned business in Ireland,” said Mariam Kazadi, the co-founder of the BBLK app.The app uses GPS to find Black-owned businesses near you. Or you can search through businesses that allow you to order online. It is organized by the type of service.As communities push for racial justice, there has been growing momentum to support Black-owned businesses. Yelp saw searches for “Black-owned business” spike 6,000% between June and August.Companies rarely identify themselves through Google searches as being minority-owned, which can make it difficult for consumers to find them.“Black-owned businesses not only don’t get visibility, but they don’t get funding. So, we want to put the Black dollar back into the community so those economies and communities can grow,” Kazadi said.The BBLK app is free for users and businesses. DENVER, Colo. — The 115th National Western Stock Show in Denver is being postponed until January 2022.Stock Show officials announced the move Monday, saying the COVID-19 pandemic "does not allow for the Stock Show to host the annual event and comply with the health and safety guidelines that are necessary to protect Coloradans and help stop the spread.""More importantly, the projected environment through to the end of the year is too uncertain and therefore not reassuring enough to allow a traditional Stock Show to take place without potentially compromising the health and safety of exhibitors, visitors, and the public at large," officials said in a news release.Doug Jones, chairman of the Stock Show, called the postponement a difficult decision but assured that the event will return in 2022 "stronger than ever."Paul Andrews, president and CEO of the Stock Show, said organizers and city officials "could not find a path forward to have Stock Show and comply with the rules that govern gatherings of our size and rules of social distancing."While some social distancing restrictions have been lifted in Denver, large gatherings have still been mostly limited.The Broncos last week announced that 5,700 fans will be allowed for the team's second home game, on Sept. 27, but the fans will be distanced in "pods" across the stadium, ensuring that no more than 175 people are gathered in the same area at one time.The Stock Show is among the largest of its kind in the United States and typically draws more than 700,000 guests over 16 days each January.The event was only postponed one other time in its history, in 1915, after an outbreak of hoof and mouth disease among cattle, Andrews said at a news conference Monday.Mayor Michael Hancock said he supported the Stock Show's decision to postpone the 2021 event."The Stock Show came back from that postponement [in 1915] and it came back stronger, and we expect that it will do the same in 2022," Hancock said.
