WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s been a strange time everywhere, with COVID-19 upending how people normally live. That includes college students, many of whom are now in a hybrid form of learning, with some on campus and some on a computer at home, like Gregory Carnesi.“Something that I've been experiencing myself, something that I've heard my peers experiencing, is just this feeling of being overwhelmed because everything is online now,” Carnesi said.Carnesi goes to Arizona State University, just one of the campuses in the U.S. where the nonprofit and mental health organization “Active Minds” recently surveyed several thousand college students, to see how they are faring in the time of COVID-19.Here’s what they found:- 1 in 4 students said their depression had “significantly increased” since the start of the pandemic- 89% of the students surveyed said they’re experiencing stress or anxiety- 56% said their daily activity had decreased or significantly decreased.“We have to remind people, ‘you know, you used to walk three miles a day to and from class, or you used to be out on the field running around for soccer practice and you're not doing that right now.’ So how else can you fill that gap and that void for yourself?” said Alison Malmon, founder and executive director of Active Minds.Malmon said it’s also important for colleges and universities to tailor student access to mental health services, since so many are no longer on campus as much.“We are still needing to promote access and we are still needing to give people the supports that they need in the way that they are able to reach them,” Malmon said.Yet, there were some positive findings in the survey.- Nearly two-thirds of students, 66%, said they have been helping support others with their mental health- 77% of those surveyed said they feel optimistic about the futureGregory Carnesi said he is just taking it one day at a time.“I really kind of think the best thing that's worked for me is just having grace and mercy with myself,” he said, “and just doing your best day to day. Even if that best is just getting out of bed and like making yourself breakfast, just like these basic things, that's enough.”If you are in need of mental health resources during the pandemic, click here. 2270

WEST CHESTER TWP., Ohio — West Chester Police are investigating a racist letter one family said was mailed to them earlier in the week. The letter, laden with racial slurs and derogatory language, demands the family take down their yard signs supporting President-elect Joe Biden and the Black Lives Matter movement.Mia Harlan said when her husband Brian opened a letter from the mail late last week, his reaction told her it wasn't a typical piece of mail."The way he responded, the way he acted, told me something wasn't right," Harlan said. The Harlans have a Black Lives Matter flag and a Biden campaign sign in their yard; the letter the couple received threatens vandalism if the signs aren't taken down.It states, in part, "if you don't take that s*** down in a hurry, we'll be aiming at your house, your cars and you."Racial slurs and expletives in the letter have been censored.Harlan said she was disgusted and angry, and the couple reported the letter to West Chester Police."Stay away from my family," she said. "Stay away from my property...what else would they do? Will they actually come to our home and try to harm us? Or try to harm our children? Our grandchildren?"The Harlans said they're taking extra precautions to stay safe, but refuse to take down the signs in their yard."My message for them is, if you don't understand what you see when this sign here saying 'Black Lives Matter,' if you don't understand the message here, then this is absolutely the thing that needs to be here," Brian Harland said.Barbara Wilson, spokeswoman for West Chester Township, released the following statement on Monday:"The matter is being taken very seriously by the West Chester Police Department. The letter is very disturbing and is being actively investigated," the statement read. "There are really no further details we can offer at this time."This story was originally published by Josh Bazan on WCPO in Cincinnati. 1934

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House has approved a bill that would make the District of Columbia the 51st state, but the legislation faces strong opposition from Republicans. The House vote was prompted by the White House's move to use federal forces to clear peaceful protesters so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church for a photo op earlier this month.D.C. statehood is an issue that advocates say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington and across the nation.Democratic lawmakers say Congress has both the moral obligation and constitutional authority to ensure that the city’s 700,000 residents are allowed full voting rights, no longer subject to "taxation without representation."Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the district’s non-voting representative in Congress, sponsored the bill, saying it has both the facts and Constitution on its side.D.C.'s population is larger than those of Wyoming and Vermont, and its budget is larger than 12 states.Action on the bill in the GOP-controlled Senate is unlikely. If the measure was signed into law, the state of “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” would be admitted into the U.S. and the new state would elect two U.S. senators and one U.S. representative. The seats would likely go to the Democrats, due to the community’s largely liberal population. The state would consist of all D.C. territory except federal buildings and monuments, including the principal federal monuments, the White House, the Capitol Building, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and the federal executive, legislative, and judicial office buildings located adjacent to the Mall and the Capitol Building. 1716
