SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When school started last week at Dailard Elementary in San Carlos, the father of a second grade student noticed several large spiders and egg sacks in the area where kids hang their backpacks. He took several photos documenting the issue. When he reached out to 10News about a week later, he said he had already spoken to a teacher, custodian, and the principal about the issue but was told a work order would need to be put in to get pest control to the school. The same parent said the spiders appeared to be brown widows, which are venomous and a bite from one requires medical attention. Kim Endicott and her driver were abducted at gunpoint from the Queen Elizabeth National Park across the border from Congo on April 2.They were released over the weekend. Details of the negotiated release have not been made public. Bill Toone is the director and founder of Ecolife Conservation in Escondido. He and several other members were leaving the park just as Endicott's group was arriving. Their guides stopped to talk. Endicott's group left and returned to their lodge. They returned to the park roughly four hours later. That's when they were ambushed. "I'm a little surprised that it ended as positively as it did. It could have obviously been really awful, and I kind of thought it might be, so it's thrilling that she's out of there," said Toone. Among other things, Ecolife Conservation provides safe, fuel efficient stoves for homes in remote areas of the world. The group has been working in Uganda for seven years. Toone said he's never felt unsafe. San Diego (KGTV)- A new affordable housing building with studio- style apartments will be coming soon to East Village. The building will be used to house the homeless. City leaders and developers broke ground on the project this morning. “Every time we get the chance to break ground on another supportive housing opportunity means that we’re going to be able to help dozens of San Diegans who need that supportive services and housing,” says Council Member Chris Ward. The building will have over 70 units for people who have experienced homelessness. There will be at least a dozen more units for those who earn 50% or less of the median average income in San Diego. The 7-story building, which includes parking, will have a glass-encased lobby, community room, laundry facilities, and counseling offices. The project aligns with the mayor’s budget proposal. In the plan, .2 million will be used for homeless programs. City leaders say combating this issue is a priority and San Diegans could see more housing, like The Link building, in the future. “If we can do this one project at a time, we can actually get to the number of units that we need in 2 years to house all of the unsheltered, chronic homeless that we see every day,” says Ward.Developers hope to have the project done by early 2021. 1312
