As Columbus, Ohio’s mayor announced that the city’s statue of Christopher Columbus will come down, a petition is circulating to rename the city “Flavortown.”The legacy of Christopher Columbus has come into focus as the country comes to grips with the United States’ past with racism. The Christopher Columbus statue at Columbus’ City Hall is one of several across the country that are slated to come down. Statues in both San Francisco and Sacramento are also in the process of being removed.A separate statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, will come down from the center of Columbus State Community College's campus. As of late Friday, more than 8,000 petitioners are calling for Columbus, Ohio’s renaming to Flavortown.“Columbus is an amazing city, but one whose name is tarnished by the very name itself,” the petition reads.“Why not rename the city Flavortown? The new name is twofold,” the petition adds. “For one, it honors Central Ohio's proud heritage as a culinary crossroads and one of the nation's largest test markets for the food industry. Secondly, cheflebrity Guy Fieri was born in Columbus.”Flavortown is Fieri's catchphrase, which he often says on episodes of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." Over the years, historians have accused Columbus of participating in slavery, murder and other atrocities against American natives in the 15th century. Despite this, Columbus was long hailed as a hero to the west, with a national holiday bestowed in his honor.“For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness. That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past,” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther wrote in a statement. “Now is the right time to replace this statue with artwork that demonstrates our enduring fight to end racism and celebrate the themes of diversity and inclusion.”A number of residents responded to Ginther in opposition to removing the statue, citing that the statue represents the city's and country's history. 2050

ANTIOCH, Tenn. — The Associated Press, CBS, and NBC News are reporting that federal investigators have been searching through the home of a possible person of interest in connection to the explosion that rocked downtown Nashville on Christmas morning. The AP reported that agencies were at a home in Antioch in suburban Nashville after receiving information regarding the investigation.According to CBS and NBC News, investigators searched the home of 63-year-old Anthony Quinn Warner.Scripps sister station in Nashville WTVF discovered just weeks ago - he signed over his longtime home to a 29-year old woman who lives in California.Property records show he sold her another house nearby a year earlier. We don't know much about Warner, other than the likely owned an alarm company during the 1990s.Law enforcement received more than 500 tips that led them to this home on Bakertown Road in Antioch.Marco Rodriguez lives in the same building as Warner. He said at around 10 a.m. on Saturday federal agents told him to evacuate."They came in and told us to get out just in case there was a bomb or something," Rodriguez said.Federal agents and metro police spent the day combing through Warner's home, making sure it was safe and looking for evidence.Neighbors tell me when police showed the picture of the RV that was used in the downtown bombing, they immediately recognized it."It was parked over there all the time," Rodriguez said, "It's weird because it could've been us if he wanted to like blow us up or the bomb could've malfunctioned."WTVF was able to dig up property assessment photos of the home. It shows the RV there as far back as 2007.Google street view pictures of Warner's property from last year also showed an RV similar to the one used in the bombing. It is unclear right now if anyone was inside the house when federal agents entered.Police Chief John Drake said tissue was found near the explosion site and authorities are working to confirm if it is human remains. This story was originally published by Seena Sleem at WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 2076

The first female brigade commander was in the class of 1992.“Earning the title of brigade commander speaks volumes, but the title itself is not nearly as significant as the opportunity it brings to lead a team in doing something I believe will be truly special,” said Barber. “I am humbled to play a small role in this momentous season of American history.”Barber is from Lake Forest, Illinois, and is majoring in a mechanical engineering, with aspirations of commissioning as a Marine Corps ground officer. As a walk-on sprinter and hurdler of the Navy Women’s Varsity Track and Field team, Barber has lettered all three years of competing and is a USNA record holder for the outdoor 4x400m relay.Word of the announcement spread quickly after a social media post by the first Black female to graduate from USNA, Janie Mines.
